Hi Guys,

Hi Guys,
I believe Dunc has been in touch with our US Guys last week to arrange to get his Upsampler back to the US Service Centre so this should all be in hand.

Dunc is in the UK AFIK. I have met him at Swavesey. Maybe a mixup with someone else?
Hi @PAR,
Yep - the one I was thinking off is a different Upsampler with an issue … I shall go back to sleep! ![]()
Yes in the uk.
Hopefully you received the email log ?
I had this kind of issue yesterday. Started up my stack from standby and chose a 24/96 album. It sounded horrible. Only after choosing a different format album did it sound properly again.
Just thinking: If it happens again instead of selecting a differently formatted album , select mute then unmute. Does the problem continue? Just a hunch but it would be interesting to find out if it has relevance.
I believe I have had this issue on a couple of occasions. It is so rare that it is hard to remember the circumstances. I just switch to a different song then come back and all is well.
Same problem here, I’m a Vivald 3 stacks without CDT user.
This problem has exists for years, sometimes it dose make me feel a little annoying.
I believe something is wrong with the Upsampler bit rate.
All I can do is switch to different bit rate songs, or do a factory reset, but it will happen again eventually.
I have checked everything, all the cables and settings are correct
Have your Upsampler been sent back to you? It’s all good now?
I’m eager to know, thanks.
I haven’t got any further with it at the moment.
Been trying a few things but it hasn’t done it for a few weeks, but I haven’t been using it as much plus been using my reel 2 reel and vinyl
Edit: My bad, you have the clock. Settings seem fine.
@CaymanCayman 940, I am not clear what your issue is. It is different from @Duncs as his concerns a terrible noise at times whereas your issue ( if I understand it), is that you have problems with the Upsampler bit rate:
Would you kindly explain a little further? I see that you have DXD lock selected and that Upsampler is showing 35.2 K out.
The DXD rate depends upon the original sample rate. 35.8 is the correct upsample rate for a 44.1K original. If the original is a 48K file the rate should change to 384K. DXD will automatically switch between the two. Is that what you are experiencing? 44.1x8= 352.8, 48x8=384.The maximum PCM upsample rate is 8 times the original file. However higher rate files , such as 96K, will upsample fewer times.
Yes, I always use roon+qobuz with local song files as my daily listening.
There are multiple sample rate of the songs, such as 16bit 44.1khz or 24bit 96khz etc…
So I set DXD lock, because I don’t want to change upsampling setting everytime when there’s different sample rate song playing.
Sometimes, when a song is finished and the roon player switch to next song which has different sample rate (from 16bit 44.1khz to 24bit 48khz, or even 24bit 48khz to 24bit 96khz)
, the distortion happens.
It sounds like there is only half signal pass through dual-AES to DAC, and that sounds terrible, sounds like a very old radio.
I have a friend who use 100% same method for daily lisening, but he never has the problem that I do, and he’s a Rossini DAC user.
Thanks. That does sound similar to the issue reported by @Dunc.
It seems that the distorted sound occurs after sample rate changes. When sample rates change the DAC is muted to avoid a nasty noise while the change takes place. You may be able to hear the click of a relay when this happens.
If the mute does not then disengage fully once the new sample rate us stable then I can imagine that you may indeed hear a distortion or “terrible sound”. However the issue is not with the upsampler but with the DAC so you or Dunc might be looking at the wrong culprit.
I wonder?
From my own experience it’s upsampler, because I have made a test.
When distortion happens, I stop the music and then I reboot DAC, but clock and upsampler stay power on, play same song and distortion remains.
So I tried another way, reboot the upsampler, but clock and DAC stay power on, play same song and then distortion just gone, eveything sounds normal.
I believe there are some people experience same problem too.

I am also certain its the upsampler doing this.
Mine has been fine for a few weeks and then out the blue it goes. I videoed it again this time, plus switching different things on and off and its only when you switch the sampling rate it goes. But it can be hardly anything or completely distorted, as sometimes I feel its not quite right and go into the settings and switch the sampling rate just to be sure and sometimes it isn’t right and sometimes it is
As far as I can tell from earlier in the thread you sent logs from the upsampler to Phil on 10th January. That is weeks ago. Has nothing at all transpired? Phil seems to have mixed you up with another user at one point but surely there must have been subsequent contact between you ?
Still in talks and its been behaving lately, but as said it went again the other day.
Sent quite a few logs off now, emails etc, but i think it will be going back soon. I feel dCS have been trying to just gain as much info first and thats fine.
Hopefully they will find out what’s going on with it soon, but it looks like i might not be on my own with this.
Well its update time.
After a nice chat with dCS tonight, I am pleased to say my upsampler is going back to headquarters.
It looks like a new control board is needed so hopefully a fast turnaround as it will put me out of streaming action for a while.
Going to drop it off to them at the hifi show in a few weeks time, but just pleased it’s being sorted. It’s taken a while but that’s also my fault as it’s been very intermittent at times and behind the scenes I have been sending in logs, videos, etc, so they could try and understand what its been doing.
But trust me I get one that plays up, shame I am not do lucky with the loto numbers.
Cheers dunc
