Marianne’s live cover of Van Morrison’s ‘Madame George’ is worth a listen on its own. The warmth of her personality shines throughout.
Are you familiar with these Jonathan?

For any of you who might have missed him all I can say is that Jacob Collier is one of the most outstanding musical talents of his generation. A modern day Mozart. Seriously folks, read his biography on Wikipedia or Roon. You will barely believe what this guy had already accomplished at the age of 25!
I can’t say that I am.
I’ll have a listen…
Point taken Jonathan, and I don’t disagree that the Beatles produced outstanding music and that John Lennon (at least) qualifies a musical genius (however you define that). But this guy is something else. Can’t understand how he has flown under my radar.
Check out his arrangement of Stevie Wonder’s “Don’t You Worry Bout a Thing” a capella with five copies of himself accompanying him in a split screen arrangement. If you are a musician (even a very poor one like me) you can probably appreciate a bit of what he is doing to the harmonies here. It is absolutely mind-blowing. This was recorded at home in his bedroom when he was 19.
From Wikipedia:
- By the age of 20 he had been signed by Quincy Jones who flew him to the 2013 Montreux Jazz Festival where he played with Herbie Hancock
- By the age of 21 he opened for Chick Corea at the 2015 Montreux Jazz Festival
- By the age of 22 he released his first album (entitled “In My Room” as it was recorded in his bedroom at his parental home)
- By the age of 24 he had won his first Grammys (plural)
- He is the first British artist to be awarded Grammys for each of his first four albums.
Etc. etc. etc.
Check out this video of him turning a 4,300-person audience into an a capella backing choir at his concert at the Coliseu de Lisboa in 2022. Quite remarkable! And the beautifully apposite first comment:
This guy is a very special talent.
…or check out this lockdown jam session with four Jacobs (again recorded in his by now world-famous bedroom. Hey, who needs a bed?).
Even if the music is not to our taste the prodigious talent is surely unarguable.
PS Two things that catch my eye here:
- The four Grammys on the top of his synth!
- The monitors on his desk. Aren’t they Kii3s?
Indulging myself again in 4 hours of Bowie:

Okay. One more Jacob Collier clip and I’ll shut up. Check out this one from The Opera House in Toronto in July of 2019.
Listen to the way he plays with the melody, the harmony and the audience. Even if the music is not to your taste (it’s not something I would necessarily listen to for pure pleasure) it is clear that he is toying with the anatomy of the tune on a higher level. It is the musical equivalent of solving five Rubik’s cubes in a minute flat while juggling them. The musicians in the audience are squealing with delight, everybody else is just looking happy but bemused, like I know I should be impressed but I just don’t get it…
But I get the impression that he is only doing this because his brain has to explore all the possibilities. His unaffected joy as he plays and the completely unselfconscious way he engages with the audience witness a genius in flow, he simply can’t be anybody else. Absolutely mesmerising!
PS …and finally(!) if none of this makes any sense to you check out this episode of WIRED magazine’s “Five Levels of Difficulty” video. If you don’t get it yet I give up!
