Mosaic does not connect to Bartok

There’s no preorder list for the Gen 2. Aside a handfull of customer test units everyone on Alex’s mailing list will get a heads up when it is orderable. According to his latest update that’s looking like Feb/Mar next year - with a bit of a following wind and assuming no further unforeseen set-backs.

Curious if your current production ER is any different to Anup’s and my ‘originals’, but please don’t open it up unless you are 100% comfortable doing so. I personally think it is a bit of a red herring as fair as your Mosaic discovery problem goes.

Hi, Warren. If it is any consolation I too am an all Mac household and my new Rossini will not connect to Mosaic. Also, the output/volume of the Rossini is way to low and I have to turn the volume control on my preamp 20db higher then normal just to achieve a reasonable listening level. Finally, I cannot figure out how to turn off the DSD upsampling. Maybe like you my expectations for a $36,800 DAC were to high.

Hi Randy, Really sorry to hear that you have had such a bad first experience. There are folks here who will be happy to try to help but it will be a lot easier if you open a thread for each problem, otherwise it will get very messy. Two questions straight off the bat:

  • Which Rossini do you have? Player or DAC?
  • Have you asked the dealer you bought it from for help? What did they say?

Hello Randy. Wondering if the “Lock” feature is engaged which will not allow any changes to the controls. My “new” Bartok was unbeknownst to me delivered as an “open box” unit and someone along the many stops it had made before reaching my house (for review by stores during first release) had changed the lock to on. Had no volume line until changed. First menu item

Thanks for responding. I purchased the Rossini Apex. I did contact my dealer and he will take it back minus a restocking fee. Also, I did open a thread about the Rossini’s volume/output. Like all of the rest of my audio components I expected a product at this level to operate much better without having to fix or adjust it. I have only had the Rossini in my system for a day and I have spent more time fussing with it to sound even a little better than my 12 year old Ayre qb-9 DSD then I have listening to music. Why did we ever leave vinyl?

Don’t give up just yet…did you check the lock feature in the config menu?

Your issue is very common for newcomers and is virtually always caused by a network fault or, rather , setting(s). It may be that Mosaic cannot discover Rossini if your device with Mosaic app and your Rossini are not connected to the same LAN etc. However I am no network expert so I suggest that you email dCS here explaining your issues:

[email protected]

They will help you ( but remember that it is now the weekend).

Reading your other thread about volume I would also suggest that you read the Rossini user manual carefully. I am sorry that you are finding it isn’t working out as you expected but I assume that you may be approaching it with some preconceptions of how it works based on experience with other equipment. I would be very surprised if the equipment is faulty in any way. It is complex however.

Hi All,

I’ve been away since last Tuesday at the Ascot show and only got back late last night so catching up with the last weeks comms - I think that I have some contact from warren on support@ so let me catch up and I’ll get onto this ASAP.

Phil

Hello Phil, The problem still persists…tried to disassemble and reassemble the network with no success attempting to see if there was an issue with the current config. Network sees the Bartok and the Roon Server but unhappily Mosaic does not communicate with the Bartok. Downloaded a fresh copy, etc…
Thanks,
Warren
@Phil

Warren, not sure what is going on here. Have you established a conversation with Phil? In his last post on this topic he only thought that he had some contact with you. However if you are having a dialogue then it would be better to follow this up between you rather than via a community forum. So it looks like perhaps that communication has not been established.

So, have you opened a ticket with @Phil?. One thing that concerns me is this:

When we talk about network configuration we are not usually referring to its physical wiring but to the router or other switch and its configuration settings. This is a software matter ,not anything that can be disassembled.

It is now the weekend here in the UK and therefore you may need to wait until next week for Phil.

Hi Warren,

If you look at the front panel “Menu” → “Information” → “Unit Status” menu then you should see the IP address of your Bartok … if you then note that down (four numbers of 0-255 separated by full stops / periods)…

…then in Mosaic, touch the gear icon at the top right of the opening screen and it should throw up a dialogue box giving you the ability to type in that IP address and connect to your Bartok directly.

If you do that then does Mosaic connect to your Bartok?

Phil

Hello Phil,

Thanks for your reply…yes, have tried this solution many time but without connection. Baffled at this end.

@PAR The disassembly described in my post was in reference to the physical reorganizing of a router and swapping out a switch for a differing switch and then the addition of the EtherRegen…as commented above…is this connection problem due to the reorganization. Was trying to reinstate to the original arrangement to see if this was the issue.

Hi Warren,

If the setup WAS working and then it was changed and is now no longer working then generally that would indicate that something that was changed caused the issue … entering the IP address of the Bartok into the direct-connect dialogue box and the app then connecting would generally show that there was an issue with UDP/SSDP traffic routing around your network (frequently caused by poorly behaving network hardware that can sometimes simply discard that traffic rather than go to the effort of handling it correctly)…

if you pull up a web browser on your phone and enter the IP address of the Bartok into the address bar of the web browser do you get anything…?

I’m reluctant to ask but are you sure that your phone is actually connected to the same network as the Bartok? I did have a customer recently who contacted me after his phone had been unable to connect to his kit for several months (but his tablet was fine) and it turned out that he’d been on holiday and turned off his WiFi on his phone while he was away and had forgotten to turn it on again afterwards - so sometimes the silly questions aren’t that silly…

…we try, but on the forums it is quite easy to miss when stuff does come in so it is handy when you guys @ us like @PAR and @wdw did this evening.

(…or better still, email us at [email protected] then it comes right to my phone and if it’s urgent I can jump on it. I was on a problem with a customer at 11pm last night that came through like that.)

As it is I’m having a bit of an 80’s evening abusing my aged ears with some rather nostalgic Alphaville on a set of Meze 109’s / Lina HPA and Lina DAC so I did happen to be around…

Edited to add : My Mrs has just come through from the next room asking me to turn it down a bit as she can hear it through there…

Hello … no worries, glad to have your assistance. Talk to me like I’m a six year old…this network stuff is just baffling and frustrating to say the least. When I do as you suggest, typing in the IP to a browser, it hangs and doesn’t complete the Bartok page. Both the Mac and, as a second check, the iPad are on the same network as the Bartok

OK … so if you can’t do a direct connect from the Mosaic app and also you can’t get to the Bartoks web interface from multiple devices then you have something going on that is blocking network traffic between the two ends …

Can I presume that it USED to work?

Yes…did work. I am now connected from the switch via SFP/Amphenol DAC/SFP then copper to the EtherRegen…have you heard of any issues with SFP and DAC? …or EtherRegen?

OK … what IP address is your Bartok actually showing as this can also help identify what’s going on?

Does it start with 169.254 ?
