Sorry, no. It’s a CD rip. I remember reading a positive review by KK in the record section of HFN&RR at the time of its release (1991) and thinking it was worth a punt. Apparently it only sold 10,000 copies. Now pretty much sunk without trace.
But I have been in love with it ever since. An album of great pop songs in a style not a million miles from say REM. PM me if you’re interested.
Not strictly something I’m “spinning” but if you like piano you might enjoy this. A 10-year-old Alexandra Dovgan giving Alexander Sladovsky and the State Academic Symphony Orchestra of Russia a good workout in the finals of the 2018 Grand Piano Competition.
Yes, I know there are some small mistakes and uneven scales, and yes, I know Perahia played this a lot better - but probably not when he was 10!
This was one of my father’s favourite records. I have fond memories of waking up on a Sunday and going down to the living room where he would be playing this at “realistic” levels, standing in the middle of the room facing his Lowther horns and conducting. Beautiful playing by Campoli sensitively supported by the RPO under Pritchard. Or maybe it’s just the familiarity, like a comfortable old pair of slippers. This from a needle drop, sadly afaik, this one has yet to make it across the digital divide and into the streaming era.
Actually, I found three versions of this oevre on Qobuz. The best sounding to my ears is the one that is transferred and distrubuted by Beulah 2015. There is another version from later on but that is clearly a rather squeeky needledrop from an unknown LP.
Thank you so much for this tip, struts001!
Jonathan I too have a Qobuz UK account and that Beulah album is certainly there. I would suggest that when using the search facility you enter Nathan Milstein using the Qobuz desktop player. In my display this album is then displayed in the sixth row down in “All Releases” .Just click the heart icon and the album will be stored in your favourites and be viewable and playable from Mosaic.
Good catch Göran, thank you! When I last checked it wasn’t available via any streaming service but that was probably at least 5 years ago. Sloppy of me to not check before posting!
