What's Spinning November 2023

Two of my favourite female R&B artists…

Aretha Now is definitely my favourite AF album. Her rendition of I Say a Litte Prayer sends shivers down my spine. What an absolutely amazing voice. The Queen of Soul.

You and me both!

Absolutely!

A thoroughly warranted title!

Staying with the R&B/Soul theme…

Are you familiar with this recording Jonathan?

Recorded 60 years ago, almost to the day, on what can only be described as a charmed night at the Apollo Theatre, I think this has to rank as one of the best live soul albums ever, maybe one of the best live albums ever.

Ben E King might have been considered the big star on the night, closing out with his monster hit Stand by Me. But what the audience (captured vividly by Atco’s microphones) got to hear that night was truly special.

Listen to the peels of laughter all the way through the Coasters’ set and you can easily imagine their on stage antics.

Reflect that Otis Redding, just turned 22, would have been a complete unknown. His first hit didn’t come for more than a year and a half. One of the girls in the audience had certainly spotted his talent though. When he sings “Pain in my heart, is leaving me cold, where can my baby be?” she shouts back “right here!”.

Doris Troy, who follows Redding, (a former usherette at the Apollo where she was discovered by James Brown) would now on the other hand have been at the height of her fame having only a couple of months earlier released her top-10 hit Just One Look.

And so it goes on. The electric atmosphere, a roster of class A performers all at the very top of their game and the sheer joy of the audience are all faithfully preserved in this time capsule. A very special recording.

No, I’m not, so thanks for posting it.

I’ll definitely have a listen.

Definitely one for a late evening, mood lighting and a glass of your preferred beverage.

Enjoy!

I’ve posted this before, but it’s still a firm favourite, hence listening to it now…
for the umpteenth time! :grinning:

For anyone that is not already aware, Spirit of Turtle’s sale is now on…

Invariably, I find ‘Pink Martini’ fun listening, and this album is no exception…

The album title is more of an aspiration than an instruction! :grinning:

It seems that this is not available on Qobuz (being my preferred streaming/download service).
Do you know if it’s available elsewhere?

Picked this up in Japan last week, from a 2022 remaster
