Welcome dCS Varèse

The Varèse Music System comprises five components: a Core; a User Interface, an optional Master Clock, and two Mono DACs – one for each audio channel. It also includes a dedicated Varèse Remote Control and a new app, dCS Mosaic ACTUS. A dedicated CD/SACD Transport will also be available from 2025.

More information about Varèse and its supporting technologies will be published on dcsaudio.com on August 9.

Systems will be manufactured in limited quantities and shipping will commence from late 2024.

I notice that the User Interface box at the top contains an external antenna.

Both L and R channel DACs indeed have 2 separate balanced and 2 separate unbalanced analogue outputs!

…and no SPDIF connections to plug in non-dCS transports?
Looking at the back of the Core unit, there may be options coming to add in new modules in the future

Indeed, we have to wait and see if the Core actually is modular.

EDIT: see below, it is modular.

Bit underwhelming tbh given all the ra-ra-ra countdown … hardly any new details. Comes across as reactive to “freeze the market” and put prospects on hold from drifting towards peer alternatives. Let’s see whether there is more info released at the Hong Kong AV show over the weekend … For sure Vivaldi sales will drop off a cliff in the interim.

The multiple back panels in the Core’s back seems to indicate that there will be an add-on modules.

Love the sculptural sound wave patterns and the overall industrial design! Cant wait to see the UI of the display unit - I hope it is a full width screen.

Have to wonder if the Varese system will support multi channel / dolby atmos. Quick glance at the controller and the connection interface suggests it might.

Time will tell!

Indeed!

F*ck! No Toslink! :rofl::rofl::rofl:

I cannot imagine that there will be no HDMI integration, through a second I/O module.

And reading the brochure - I wonder and hope that we will see an innovation in DAC to volume control - It would be a amazing innovation have a volume control that operates bit perfectly at DXD (although at 190db the current volume control is no slouch). Combined with a 30dB reduction in system self noise.

Could you imagine a dCS system transparent down to say -60-70dB on the volume control?

time will tell…

And reading further - the new DAC architecture with double the current sources and a new differential mode may increase linearity and drive down distortion even further… How low can it go? Hopefully lower than what our brains can perceive!

My limited semi technical understanding of the Ring DAC secret sauce is the randomization of errors is what fools our brains into thinking we are hearing analogue.

Hopefully the new ring DAC will set a new technical benchmark!

Meanwhile our friends at ASR came to this conclusion:

Just what we need, the internals of a Wim in a fancy chassis

I think the brochure was taken down, breaching the embargo? This Friday all the news will come to us, in a series of articles by dCS.

All of this techno discussion and speculation misses a really important aspect. What colour is it to be.? black or silver? Surely for $200K+ it must be Erebus or Argentum?
