Verdi TOC error

I put a CD into my Verdi and has a TOC error. The problem is that I can take the CD out.

I’ve hard/soft restart many times but the eject button still doesn’t work.

Please help. Thank you.

Anyone knows why this happens?

the Verdi is now an elderly transport. Faults as described are often associated with failures of the trqansport mechanism in particular where the optical pickup has reached the end of its workable life. Unfortunately the OEM manufacturer ceased their interest in this sector tears ago and spares are now sparse or non-existent.

I would suggest that you contact support at dCS directly and seek their advice:

Sorry for reviving an old topic but I was wondering if you got a resolution to your TOC problem as my Verdi is doing the same thing i.e. every cd/sacd I’ve tried just caused the unit to freeze with the message ‘Reading TOC’

I managed to get the CD’s out by pulling the power cord then reinserted it and hitting eject as the unit started up.

I contacted dCS but they only suggested blowing air into the draw tray and if that didn’t work we can’t help as its out of support and too old.

Thanks

Paul

Paul, the answer that I gave in 2024 to @timhoau outlines the reason for your issue.

You seem to have contacted dCS over this. If they now only recommended trying dusting the laser lens by blowing air into the drawer this suggests that they no longer have spares in order to replace what is likley to be an OPU that is now no longer functioning within spec.

To give you an idea of scale the position, Verdi used a Sony mechanism and they exited manufacturing for the OEM CD market many years ago ( much like most other actors). I owned one of the first Verdis in 2000 or thereabouts. By 2010 I had returned my Verdi to the factory for its third replacement OPU. The outcome was that I was able to move to a Paganini stack.

Replacement Sony OPUs are now virtually ( or even entirely) unobtainable. I had found one on the internet in the same year which was later sold to a friend to repair his Sony ES333 player ( the same mech.). That was the last time I saw one on offer. So 16 years ago.

I am afraid that you may need to think now of alternatives. Aside from finding used dCS transports you will be unlikely to get a usable CD/SACD machine for otherwise ( not only because few are uncommon but because dCS SACD players generate a proprietary encoded DSD output to mate with e.g. a dCS DAC which has the decoding circuitry and I assume you have).

For CD only there are a few Chinese made CD only transports with the necessary wordclock input like SMSL P200T. Inexpensive and cording to our friend @Dunc, very satisfactory.

Cheers Pete (par)

Just to add, if you haven’t seen my thread on the smsl p200t transport then it’s worth a visit.

But basically it works very well with dCS. It has aes out, it works with the dCS clock, so no need to either turn the clock off or go into settings to adjust the clock setting to audio. But it also sounds great and costs less than £500 new.

Certainly don’t be put off by the price.

I’m scared to touch anything inside the Verdi. I understand that the TOC problem is an ageing problem.

I’m not technical and found a stupid way to continue using my Verdi.

I have a CD which is very acceptable to Verdi. When I have the TOC problem, I tried many different CD to find one playable so I play this CD to whenever I turn on the Verdi. After playing half of the CD, it can play any others. It seems like the old Verdi need to warm up.

Many thanks for your reply Pete. Very detailed and much appreciated.

I shall check out Duncan’s recommendation and see if I can find a suitable replacement. I don’t want to have to write of the whole stack as the Puccini, Verona and Delius all work well. (at least they did the last time the Verdi worked.

Once again many thanks.

Paul

Thanks Duncan, I shall do as you suggest.

Hi Timothy, I might try the same although it may take a long time as I have to pop the power each time to get the cd out again.
