Qobuz Connect is finally out of beta! Is dCS ready?

The only small issue in having is that when Qobuz connects with my Bartok it always sets my volume lower than what I set the previous time.
I want my Bartok to output at 0db setting, means max volume, Qobuz keeps moving it down to about 1/3 of the bar.

It’s the same for me with my Rossini Apex.
A bit of a pain, but not insurmountable…

I guess that this may be a strategy to prevent hearing damage with headphones using the Qobuz app. Unfortunately I can find no volume control in the iOS version of the app though the PC version does have one.

That’s a good point, Pete.

I have been thinking about this and am not sure what is being discussed, @Fafner and @Bauer .

The Qobuz app for iOS does not have a volume bar. At least I cannot see one and there is none in the screenshot that I have posted earlier in this thread. There is a bar but this is not volume but play progress.

Would either of you help me out by posting a further explanation or screenshot of what you are referring to?

If Qobuz Connect delivers a bit perfect file to your dCS unit then there can be no volume adjustment as the result would no longer be bit perfect.

This is what shows up every time Qobuz connects to my Bartok

@PAR Typically, my connection to Qobuz is now playing up…

However, as you’ll see from this screenshot, the volume bar is located at the bottom right side…

Thanks guys.

What version of the Qobuz app are you using? I have the iOS version and the opening graphic does not look like that and has no volume bar. There is one to be found and , in this version, appears on a separate speaker selection page.

As tonight’s Prom is not appealing to me my system (tube preamp) is not turned on. However I need to check on what the Qobuz volume control is affecting which I shall explore later. At this point I am concerned as it may indicate that Qobuz Connect is not sending a bit perfect file to your dCS unit . This would explain why some are hearing a difference between Qobuz Connect and Mosaic.

Pete, you’re mistaken. Qobuz Connect is absolutely not in the path of music streams between the dCS Streamer/DAC and Qobuz Servers. The bit-depth/resolution of trackes presented to the DAC are what’s on the Qobuz Servers. The Volume control on the Qobuz App controls the native volume on the dCS, not the incoming bit-perfect stream.

@PAR I’m using the MacOs app. This is the version…

Thanks Anup but I am not mistaken - yet  I said “may” and not “will” and that :

Which I haven’t yet done and I expect that you may be correct that "

Which I will hopefully confirm though as Qobuz does not send the file to the DAC in a Vivaldi stack but to the Upsampler and as the Upsampler cannot control the native volume of the Vivaldi DAC I cannot understand how the volume is managed from the Qobuz app unless it is manipulated before being sent to Upsampler.

Happy to get any further information on this.

Hi Pete, The Upsampler signals volume changes requested from an internet control point (Mosaic/Roon/Qobuz/Tidal etc.) to the DAC via codes embedded in the AES frame headers. So even though the Vivaldi DAC is not connected to the internet itself, the volume can be controlled via the Upsampler from internet control points. Cunning stuff!

Thanks Andrew. As I remarked I am happy to receive information like this.

Yes that works

Suddenly I can’t see our Rossini in Qobuz. I can see and use Qobuz via Mosaic and Roon. Odd.

Vince, more than likely something’ is up with your home network. In case you missed it, I outlined exactly how the Qobuz App sees your dCS component in a post soon after the dCS firmware update was released to support Qobuz Connect.

It may help you to diagnose the problem further;

As well as Anup’s helpful advice there may be a simple explanation but it depends on exactly what you are reporting.

When you say you suddenly can’t see Rosini in Qobuz I assume that therefore it has been OK previously. If Rossini has been off or put in sleep mode for a period
Qobuz may revert to your device as speaker. All that you need do is tap the speaker select option in Qobuz then re-select Rossini from the menu. Or do you mean that you have done this but no Rossini is showing in the Menu?

Thinks: If Mosaic has Qobuz working OK as you say then at face value your network is fine.

Peter, actually, even if the Rossini is asleep (not OFF), it’s network board will still respond to Qobuz Connect query signals and appear on the Qobuz Connect end-point list. The same applies across the dCS family, including the Vivaldi Upsampler.

Thanks Anup but this does not seem to be the case in practice. Or, rather, I think that yioiu are not dealing with the precise point.

I have just verified: Vivaldi on: Qobuz shows Vivaldi Upsampler selected as speaker. Vivaldi in sleep mode: Vivaldi Upsampler is no longer shown on home page as the selected speaker. Qobuz reverts to i-phone. Vivaldi Upsampler now has to be reselected as speaker ( though it still appears as an end point choice). I assume that Rossini is the same.

Then there’s something off with your setup Pete.

Regardless of whether my Vivaldi Stack is awake or asleep, every time I launch the Qobuz App (on iPhone or MacOS), the dCS Vivaldi is always listed as a “speaker” option.

I just verified it. My stack’s been asleep for the last 18 hours, I just launched Qobuz on my iPhone and the Vivaldi’s there.
