We’ve seen some issues with some purchased AIFF files that have the various file chunks (metadata, album art, music data, etc) in an odd order. A workaround is to re-encode them using dbpoweramp or another similar software package. Just doing a media conversion from AIFF to AIFF (with no other changes) is enough to spit out a valid file.
I’ve had this type of problem. Solved (on a Mac) by using XLD to convert AIFF to AIFF - I guess this corrected odd meta data, as you suggest.
