My Elgar Plus makes noise after warming up for 10 minutes

Hello,
My Elgar Plus makes noise after warming up for 10 minutes. I’ve already replaced the larger power capacitors, but it didn’t help.

I know this problem has been discussed before, could you please help?

Thanks
Massimo

Hi Massimo. I see that this is your first posting here so I hop e that we can be of help.

It may assist if you give us a little more detail about the noise. Do you mean a noise ( e.g. buzzing or a hum) made by the Elgar itself or is it a noise generated by the Elgar but heard from your loudspeakers?

If it is a mechanical noise as per the first example above , this may come from the power transformer . The most common reason for this type of noise is caused by distortion from the mains supply feeding Elgar. The AC waveform is polluted by a small amount of DC current added in error. Solutions include addition of a power conditioner of which there are many on offer.

Hi Pete, thanks for the quick reply.

I’ve had the Elgar Plus for 15 years and will try to provide you with more information:

  • When I turn on the unit, I hear a hum coming from the speakers. It’s not a constant hum, but a modulated hum.

  • Sometimes the hum gets very loud.

  • If I turn off the power amplifiers, the hum is clearly audible on the Elgar Plus’s transformers.

  • I already use a power conditioner that blocks DC current.

Thank you
Massimo
