Local storage + qobuz in one combined library

hi new dcs user here so beginners question, can someone tell me what the solution is to have all my music i.e. qobuz and locally stored files from minimserver all in the one place - apart from roon. as far as i can see mosaic doesnt achieve this without switching from qobuz to upnp inputs manually which splits by library and is unworkable for me. thx

What‘s wrong with Roon? dCS is fully Roon capable.

Mosaic won’t do this and , outside of Roon, I have not come across other media players that will do this as a choice of which library to use has to be chosen.

the merging of libraries is not ideal for all. I would want to avoid such a feature. The reason being that I am a classical music enthusiast,. The same title exists for numerous albums. For example I own 6 different versions of Symphonie Fatastiqe, Belioz. If my library was merged with Qobuz and I asked to play the work, not only would I see the 6 that I own but over 350 other albums from Qobuz having the same or similar titles to choose between. to get around this I would need to devise detailed searching terms. Not very user friendly IMO.

While I agree with Pete about the classical challenge, I will say this: I have no trouble distinguishing in Roon between the discography that is in my library and the many other versions of a title offered in Qobuz. But I suspect that Pete has way more classical works than I do.

I think the many ways a work can be titled, and the many ways it can be catalogued, remain a challenge as illustrated by this Roon community discussion, but it has definitely improved over time, A d if you want to integrate your local and streaming libraries, it’s tough to beat Roon.

Hello,

Why do you wish to exclude Roon?

Thanks,

Erwan

Hi Rudi, Erwan,

  • last few weeks every time i search on roon and click the album result my app crashed. known issue by roon but it took them 3-4 weeks to fix something i use multiple times a day which used to work fine but crashed my app 5 times a day for a month
  • sometimes clicking play in roon app does nothing which is infuriating
  • roon ui is powerful but far too bloated and lacking customisation - im fussy, i want perfection, if it doesnt exist i’ll build my own, so im on a journey to see if there is something better before i have one built
  • im currently getting dropouts on roon but thats a temporary issue with my dcs that ive no doubt will be fixed - but probably the icing on the cake at this stage

i dont want to knock anyone who uses roon, its great, but in this day and age it should be better, its just not for me any longer.

happy Sunday listening to everyone not getting dragged to the shops!

Well, (unfortunately) nothing is perfect these days. Interesting I get none of the issues you are seeing in Roon.

Looks like you may indeed have to resort to building your own. Don’t underestimate the complexity of such a task though. The issues you seem to be having with Roon may well have to do with the extremely complex task Roon is trying to tackle.

An area to watch is the metadata architecture. You need to get this one right (common index across Local and Qobuz, populated from different sources such as discogs, musicbrainz etc.) if you want to have any chance to make this work. If you do make this work you may have a major business opportunity. There are a lot of people dissatisfied with the current state of affairs.

3-4 weeks to fix an issue is actually not that bad. Takes quite a bit of regression testing.

Thx Andrew, trying now but it doesnt let me select [UPnP] varese-interface-5769bjbskjnfs and doesnt let me output audio to my Oladra player over usb/aes either. So far a non starter

@Tommytwotimes , thanks for you answer.

Looks like you suffer either network issues or problem with the Operating System running your Roon server/core here. To me, Roon is very stable, now.

But I’ve been suffering issues & instabilities by the past:
most were actually coming from either Win10 or OSX power-modes/firewalls/network-security-update when I was running Roon on a PC/MacMini, always forcing to re-tune/check the computer network & stand-by settings after an OS update, having to restart Roon Server software sometimes twice a day for no obvious reasons…

Since I’ve bought a small dedicated NUC, installed Roon & Roon ROCK as the OS, and connected the thing to the network using Ethernet, all issues are gone!
Other here have very stable, yet different, Roon instals. @AndrewS for example also uses a NUC but installed a Linux OS on which his Roon server is running.

Now for what regards UI tuning, except for the Light or Dark Theme, no customization is available in Roon, that’s true.

Ah, sorry Tommy. Forgot you have a Varèse/Oladra.

We have partnered with Audirvāna and all our (other) products are certified to work with it. When I open the audio settings in Audirvāna (loudspeaker icon bottom right) I see the UPnP renderers of my dCS network players in the ’Network’ section, are you saying you don’t?

Let me double check the certification status of Varèse, but I believe it should work.

As far as using the Oladra as the renderer, that should also work IIUC. The Oladra needs to be configured to act as a UPnP renderer for which I believe the correct setting is ”MPD with MiniDLNA” under ”Player Devices” (I am not an expert on the Antipodes line and don’t have access to one to try, but your Antipodes dealer will be able to confirm).

[EDIT: Varèse has yet to be certified with Audirvāna, but per above it should work via the Oladra.]

Audirvana neophyte here however - isn’t their claim to fame the fact they do audio processing at the computer (server level), which to me would imply not bit perfect when it hits the DAC? From their website:

Comprehensive upsampling and digital signal processing options are on hand to fine-tune performance, while Audirvāna applies optimisation to limit interference from the PC processor, all to get the most out of your music.

• Upstream processing

On the opening page they show a motion graphic of the interface including a screen which shows equalization graphs etc. If they are promoting that then one can assume the above statements from their website are part of what they are selling?

Thanks Gregg good to know, in that case Audirvana is not an option for me, ill keep tinkering!

All the DSP is optional IIUC (although I haven’t personally tested Audirvana for bit-transparency). I believe it is analogous to Roon in that regard.

And just echoing Erwan’s comments I have been a Roon user since day one, currently running my Roon Server on an ASUS NUC running DietPi (so I can also run MinimServer, otherwise I would probably use ROCK) and not experiencing any of the dropouts or problems that Tommy has mentioned.
