Is there any difference in the mechanism dCS uses to play files in a locally mounted USB drive vs files served via UPnP (minimserver on a computer)?
Or does the network card effectively create a UPnP server out of the locally mounted drive?

Playing a local file: the dCS platform accesses that local file, and pipes it to the DAC.
Playing from an UPnP server: the dCS platform asks the UPnP server to set up a network stream, which gets relayed to the DAC.
Two totally different mechanisms.
