CD track info in mosaic

I have a Rossini player (non Apex) and I am controlling it with Mosaic App on an iPad. I can play the CD, but there is no track details or artwork displayed.
App version 1.4.3 (151)
Front panel and control board version 2,1
network version 1.4.3 (513)
Artwork and track details work fine in other modes (uPnP, qobuz)

Yes. It isnt supported

Thanks for the info barryr1.
Now I wish I hadn’t bought the player because of the crude control in CD mode.

It depends upon exactly what youwant or mean.

Apps like Mosaic work by showing the data with which they are provided. CD is technology from the late 1970s ( with commercial availability from the early 1980s). This is well before the complexity of metadata provision which we are familiar with in respect of UPnP or streaming services was practical or teven hought of. So the only data avaiable from a standard CD with this 45 year old technology is the DSD music data plus the ToC ( number of tracks, length). There is no file of the cover artwork to draw from. Detailed track nformaion also does not exist although some CDs do have some additional track data in the subcode area. This can, however, only be accessed by certain player mechanisms. If I remember correctly ,although the early dCS transports with mechanisms from Sony could read this, the ability was not by any means universal.

Unfortunately expecting a CD player to emulate the technolgy of UPnP files as far as displaying and using metadata is concerned is not possible as the necessary igital data does not exist in CD form.

Of course with CD the metadata ( cover art, track information) is provided in the booklet or other packaging in any case. This was state of the art in 1983 :slightly_smiling_face:.

I was hoping for a list of tracks with the title of each track.

But a number of players such as oppo pull metadata from the net such as Gracenotes and others. I don’t think it would be difficult to accomplish if dcs decided they wanted to do it

Yes, there are indeed third party applications though how reliable for niche repertoires is unknown to me. Any views on this are welcome.

Of course for dCS to incorporate one of them in Mosaic is down to them, the demand from customers ( this is the only time it has been referred to here in my recollection) and a business decision as the proprietors would presumably seek a licence fee. Of course many users here have moved away from silver disc to UPnP where this topic is less relevant as most of us ensure that adequate metadata is created when ripping or it accompanies downloads.

If anyone feels strongly about this why not make it a formal request?

As I alreaty explained the requisite digital data for this is not availabe in the usual CD format. CD Text did exist but mainly for Columbia/CBS releases and I don’t know if this has contiued into this decade. The availabilty of mechanisms that can read this is nnot known but I cannot recall reading a review of a CD player that can do it for years.

AFAIK the only way anyting like this could be made available is by incorporating a thrid party application ( as noted by @barryr1 ) to which I refer elsewhere in this thread.

I have a Vivaldi MKII transport and am very disappointed in the integration to Mosaic too. The Easy Play only works one way. When I put a disc in it does change the input to AES1/2 but when I take the disc out it does change back (which I usually don’t find out 'till next day when I go to play and I don’t hear anything!) Mosaic doesn’t show the track playing or the elapsed time. It only shows play and stop buttons and if you use them then the handheld remote no longer works until a reboot of the unit. I did find out that if I change the communication protocol to T then it will show the track number and elapsed time and the proper button (play, pause, stop, eject) but the buttons don’t work. Very disappointing.

Here’s what I’d like to see:
When the disc is inserted the input is changed. When the unit is empty the input is changed back.
When the disc is inserted the play queue is populated with the track list (Track01, Track02, etc.) and the total disc time. That way I could start play at other than track 1 or skip tracks or rearrange tracks.
Now playing should show track playing, elapsed time, total time, a progress bar and media type.
Proper buttons should appear when appropriate and be functional and not disable the remote.
Bonus…look up and display album art.

Just to clarify, I am very happy with the performance of the dac and don’t regret buying the Rossini dac, just the player.
Most of the time that I listen to digital music, I listen to ripped music from a NAS or qobuz streaming. I rip using a Naim uniti core and that brings up a list of tracks with their titles, I guess I was hoping that mosaic would do the same for CD plays.

I sympathise with what you would like . However the Naim unit ( or Mosaic) can only do what it does given the metadata already encoded in your rips. That information is not there with CD. Blame Philips for not thinking of this in 1978 ( or thereabouts).

Indeed it was commercially launched in 1982/3 ( depending on territory). I have a CD from the UK pre - launch presentation at the BPI. However its invention and specification came much earlier so I chose a late 70s date.

Indeed end of 70s. This was the first working prototype:
