Bartok playing at double speed

A new problem has developed. Sometime playback will seem to get stuck at the wrong bit rate. For instance if I’m playing something at 192 then move to a lower bit rate that music will be too high and too fast like playing a 33 1/3 record at 45. I usually will hear what sounds like a relay click when changing bit rates. When the problem is occurring I don’t hear this click. Once the problem develops music from Qobuz, tidal or my server all have the same problem. A power recycle solves the problem until it comes back. It happened for the first time yesterday. And has repeated today. Not sure of the trigger. All music played via mosaic.

There have been a few similar issues reported over the past few years. Suggested solutions include network issues, replay software and hardware. However I can find no clear solution reported.

In the circumstances I suggest you contact:

If you are not using a dCS clock together with your Bartók: is your Bartók’s clock mode set to Master?

Are you using a USB connection to the Bartók? IIRC, the few times this has come up before, it’s been related to the USB connection.

Apparently the problem is not unique to dCS components, and has happened to a few other DACs as reported by Roon users. While the issue was documented by Roon’s CTO years ago (see this thread below), I don’t think it’s unique to Roon either, seems mostly a USB driver/state confusion issue.

Thanks for these comments. I’m using mosaic on the dac only. No usb or media player. And the clock is set to master. It super random and just started. I hope it’s just a random event and does not indicate a repair is needed.

I have experienced this problem also on my Bartok. Only with playing Tidal playlists. One time it played at double speed, and a couple of times at super slow speed. It also seems to occur when there is change in sampling rate. I haven’t found a pattern yet or to be able to reproduce it. It’s pretty rare. Turning it off and back on solves the problem.

Hello,

I had the same problem by the past.

Unfortunately, the culprit was my Bartok which was faulty. Once fully replaced, no more issue(s).

My previous unit was actually suffering several transient issues. It could run fine for some time, and all of the sudden suffer either from huge distortion (mainly at startup) or from wrong bitrate same as described here, or from scrambled screen, or…

There’s clearly something wrong with having wrong bitrate issues.
Don’t hesitate to contact @Phil and dCS support to solve this out quickly.

Hope this can help,

Erwan

For what it’s worth, when I had what seems like the same problem with my Bartok (searching for “chipmunks” might find the thread) it was with the Bartok streaming via Ethernet, not USB as @Anupc recalled. (Mind you, I might be an Ethernet outlier!)

Ahh.

From my quick search this morning, it looked like it was mostly related to USB, but then I also saw folks pointing fingers at Roon, and separately at Tidal as well as culprits.

In other words, the “issue” seems to be all over the place

Hi @dankaplan

I’m sorry that you are having problems, as @PAR has suggested, can you contact me at [email protected] and we can start working through this with you?

Cheers

Phil

I had similar very sporadic issues with my Rossini DAC before it got upgraded to APEX. After that, not so much *knock on wood*

dCS suggested at the time it was due to a slightly faulty cable bridge between the bottom and middle circuit board so they replaced it; this seemed implausible to me at the time but hey, it does seem to have helped…

Hi All,

Can I possibly just flag that there are many possible causes for what may seem to be similar problems - it is always a “thing” with forums where someone posts that they have an issue and there are a number of replies which is wonderful that so many people want to try to help but not all roads lead to Rome (as the saying goes) so I would always recommend giving us / me a shout at [email protected] wherever possible and we can usually get onto things pretty quickly.

Similarly please be aware that dropping an “I also have this / an issue too…” into the middle of a thread can result in it not getting seen amongst everything else that’s going on so again, please pop an email to [email protected] and that will come find me.

This is in no way any attempt to bury, mask or hide anything and I know (and appreciate) that many of you either tag me or suggest that posters do contact [email protected] which again is fantastic - just trying to get issues resolved quickly and efficiently so that you can be back to listening to music again.

Cheers

Phil

I have also experienced this problem with both Bartok and the current Rossini. Like my colleagues, I have no way to repeat it. The only clue is to change the frequency of the files being played, e.g. from 44.1 kHz to 88.2 kHz. I only use Mosaic and both Bartok and Rossini are connected to the network via an Ethernet cable.

Hi @robertt,

Have you contacted us to get us to look into this with you? I don’t see anything from you…

At the risk of sounding like a broken record - please drop me an email to [email protected] and we can get on it with you…

Cheers

Hi Phil,
No, I didn’t report this problem because I can’t replicate it 100%. It appears from time to time and causes the Rossini front panel buttons to freeze. Rossini responds to song changes from Mosaic and only turning the device off with the switch on the rear panel causes it to work properly. I can report this problem directly to technical support but I don’t have good experiences because I’m waiting for a fix for the availability of UPNP servers since the introduction of version 513 of the network card software. I can’t say that the experience is bad because a temporary solution was found, which consisted of using an old version of the network card firmware. However, this prevents me from using the latest Mosaic features.
Regards Robert

Robert, may I suggest that you take up @Phil’s suggestion to send an email to support at dCS. The reason is that individual technical problems cannot be guaranteed for him to see them via this forum. Please see his posting prior to your earlier one yesterday He says:

It seems that, in fact, youhave two issues that should not be happening. Double speed replay and your UPnP servers not showing when using the current Mosaic software. This thread only concerns the first of course. So that is another reason for you to contact support directly and not leave things to chance as Phil may not necessarily see either this posting or your earlier one today.

Robert-- I suggest you email Phil. We’ve been emailing and he has been very helpful.

Hi @dankaplan

It looks like Robert and I have already been in touch if I’ve popped him back on the 511 network firmware while we sort the solution…
