Iâve been using Sara Bareillesâ haunting cover of âGoodbye Yellowbrick Roadâ as a demo track for a while now, most recently as the closing track at the Audio Concepts VarĂšse launch event last weekend. I have heard that and her cover of âSittinâ on the Dock of the Bayâ many times at shows and events and they have become permanent fixtures on my demo playlist. But I have never explored the rest of the album until now. My bad!
The more I hear the more I like. My favourite tracks are two of her own, âLove Songâ and âKing of Anythingâ. Ms Bareilles is a singer, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter with serious chops. Learning that she is largely self-taught only makes this more impressive. The way she grafts a new G minor open fifth intro onto âGoodbye Yellowbrick Roadâ which is in F is almost Jacob Collier-like in its freedom with harmonic structure.
How have I missed her?

Again, Paul McGowan will tell you DSD is the only support that brings you the best restitution with the finest details, and that Octave Records is the only studio to directly record their artists in DSDâŠ
Now, a DSD128 file with a dynamic range of 5dB only shouldnât be sellable IMHO.
Marketing, still marketingâŠ
Pleasant record otherwise from a musical standpoint!
Iâve seen her in concert a couple of times. Both shows were very good.
