What's Spinning December 2024

Schubert: Symphony no. 9 (‘Great’) in C major & Five German Dances
Ivan Fischer, Budapest Festival Orchestra
Channel Classics - 14th June 2011
DSD 64

In my opinion, a superb performance with excellent RQ/SQ by Channel Classics.

With NativeDSD’s ‘Black Friday’ sale on, it seemed churlish not to take advantage of a 50% saving on 10+ albums, so I bought 11 !

A couple more from the Varèse customer event in Taipei:

RCA Victor Symphony Orchestra, Stokowski “Smetana: Moldau; Liszt: Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2; Roumanian Rhapsody No. 1” 2010, Qobuz 24/88.2

Kanasa City Symphony, Kraybill, Geller, Gibbs, Stern “Saint-Saëns: Symphony No. 3 in C Minor “Organ Symphony”, Introduction et rondo capriccioso in A Minor & La muse et le poète” 2015, Qobuz 24/176.4

I can highly recommend the latter if you want to test your in room bass response. Subterranean!

Thanks for the reminder. I have the album in my library, but I haven’t listened to it for a while. I will remedy that.

As you say, the bass is subterranean. It certainly gives my Alexia V’s a good workout!

Bruckner: Symphony no. 7
Ivan Fischer, Budapest Festival Orchestra
Channel Classics - 8th July 2014

I have to say that I am pretty disappointed by most of the (new) classical releases I’ve heard on DSD. Many far from satisfying performances IMHO. But this Channel Classics series with the Budapestians under Fischer is excellent. The exception that proves the rule!

I concur. That’s why I bought 10 albums to add to my existing Fischer collection!

Rachmaninov: Symphony no. 2 in E minor Op. 27, Vocalise no. 14 Op. 34
Ivan Fischer, Budapest Festival Orchestra
