for sacd playing only–is there any advantage provided musically by having the signal sent to the upsampler before it hits the DAC? I dont know alot about that stuff–but i am curious and the question will not get out of my head

No Mike, there’s no advantage as the Upsampler does not upsample SACD/DSD signals.
Which is also why the dCS Vivaldi Manual recommends that in a full 4-box Vivaldi stack, the Transport’s main AES1&2 ports be directly connected to the DAC’s AES 1&2.
