Those of you with transports in your stack. How do you set them up. for SACD do you use DSD or upsample to DSD2? With a CD do you turn off PCM and use the transport to upsample to DSD or DXD and send to DAC or do you run it through the Upsampler? I am currently using DSD for SACDs and using the Upsampler to upsample CDs to DXD. I am assuming that the dedicated Upsampler would be better than the Transport? Maybe not?
I have the transport but not the upsampler (yet). It’s on my wishlist. I upsample redbook to DXD with PCM turned off. I guess you would have to compare to hear what you like best.
As I wrote in the last few days on another thread, dCS techs have advised that upsampling at the transport is (or is theoretically,) better than via Upsampler. However he options of sampling rates for PCM are limited ( DSDx2 or DXD).
I agree with @August that comparing yourself is best. I dislike upsampling via either method ( of course Ring DAC involves a degree of upsampling but that is somewhat different). So I only use Upsampler for the network board. But I appreciate that I am an outlier.
That was in a thread here maybe 2-3 years ago (though my sense of time is not reliable). So it was probably from James.
BTW, I used the term “theoretically” as I vaguely recall that the reason may have related to the position of upsampling in the architecture of the system rather than the physical execution. So the subjective outcome may or may not reflect this.
I recall Seeking a post from Andrew P from a year-or-so ago where he stated that up sampling in the transport meant that all filtering in the DAC would be pushed well away from the audio band (although in my mind that holds true wherever it is performed but I’m probably missing something). Could that be the one you’re thinking of Pete?
Thanks but that was not it . The post ( as I recall - not that this is all that reliable ) was quire explicit on this topic. BTW, Andrew left us quite a while ago and that post was from 2019. I think it was more recent.
