Transport or separate CD player?

Sorry about the problems reaching us by phone. I have flagged this internally. Email to [email protected] is always there as a backup however.

At 13 years old even if it doesn’t need attention now now it will later and not too much later either. There are possibly now only NOS spares ( if any at all) which come from an exhaustible stock so the future is bleak.

Perhaps you need to clarify your needs. If you really only want to play CDs and not SACDs or only have a few and cost is sensitive there are a couple of Chinese CD transports with the requisite wordclock input. No they will not be as good as a Vivaldi but serve a purpose.

All them thoughts above certainly went through my mind, I just couldn’t justify it, really need it or want expensive problems going forward.

I tried a few different transports and basically they all sounded the same going into my upsampler and being upsampled to DSD ×2. The only missing bit was the clock support and I wanted that so I didn’t have to keep swapping the dac over to audio to stop it messing about with the transport not clocked locked.

Lucky I found one and its been great, very cheap as well so if it does go wrong fiwn the line then nothing really to worry about.

Would I still like the Vivaldi transport, yes. Do i need it, no. Only you can decide what’s best for you.

I have just withdrawn from buying the Transport. `Pity as it was the only affordable Black Vivaldi Transport I had found for sale.

Thanks for all the advice. I will stick with what I have.

Mike

For transports, especially older ones, I would strongly recommend considering our Certified Pre-Owned programme. Products sold as CPO have not only been serviced at the factory and passed exactly the same tests as a brand new unit prior to sale, but carry a factory-backed 18 month (non-transferrable) warranty.

Hello Andrew,

Just spoken to the dealer (a dCS Vivaldi dealer) who says he unaware of the Pre-owned programme but will be contacting you.

Albany, Andrew, I only found out about the programme from dCS and, as far as I can remember, my dealer didn’t know about it either. Is this programme very active - i.e., is there plenty of demand and enough supply to match it - and should the dealers be more involved in it (and promoting it) than they appear to be?

Perhaps Andrew would clarify.

Clarification really needed as dealers are generally unaware of the CPO scheme.

Hi Albany

I was meant to reply to this yesterday on behalf of Andrew but I missed out on doing so. Apologies

We are working on the programme and it’s promotion to retailers. It’s safe to say that it’s had a phased roll out globally and we are working with distributors to increase its presence where needed.

Have a great bank holiday weekend if you have one!

Mark

Has any Vivaldi 3 stack user tried the Teac VRDS - 701T CD transport ? A poor relation of Esoteric.

Looks good spec wise, AES and USB outputs and an external clock input. Home demo not easily arranged.

I am afraid that the clock input is not usable with dCS,

There are two types of clock inputs for audio devices. The most common ( where they exist) with CD players/transports is for a master clock . These are a 10mHz signal. dCS clocks do not output this but the other type of clock for audio, a wordclock. The ise are based on the frequencies used in digital media; 44,1 or 48.0 kHz and multiples thereof. The Teac does not have this.

So look for wordclcok not master clock input.

Thankyou Pete, my education in matters digital continues.

This thread was referenced above but more info has been posted since. The SMSL P200T is a good low cost solution for dCS users who need to spin redbook cds. AES EBU out and word clock in.

still confused why people want to play cd’s when that’s all they need to do is RIP them

Pete if an external master clock like the multi output Mutec were used could it not synchronise both the Teac and the Vivaldi Clock?

When you use an external clock to synchronise two devices it is actually still using the existing clock circuitry in each device but is referencing them to the same crystal in the external clock which supplies the same output to both devices.

AS the only clock input to the Teac requires 10mHz and the dCS DAC 44.1 or 48kHz or multiple , the two references would not be identical and therefore implicitly not synchronised. You need a single reference signal supplied o both.

No, is the simple answer.

You need a transport that supports 44.1 at 75 ohm’s.

The smsl transport does this and a few others, but not many to choose from unfortunately, unless you go for dCS transports

The Vivaldi clock has an external clock input that accepts a 10Mhz input signal as does the Teac transport.

So I assume I could use a 10 MHz Mutec Clock to synch the Vivaldi clock and the Teac transport ?

The Vivaldi clock would as normal supply the Upsampler and the DAC with the correct clock frequencies ?

Would this arrangement work ??

Sorry if I am being a bit dim

I have never seen this proposed before but it seems to make sense. Has anyone comments on this idea ?

Dont believe it will work as the vivaldi clock just sends out a latch that the other clocks in the system see and sync too, as been said it doesn’t replace them clocks. Plus they operate at 44.1 and 48.

So to me adding a master clock to the vivaldi doesn’t change how the clock works, all it has done is add a clock signal to the vivaldi clock to hopefully give the clocks inside the vivaldi a signal, it doesn’t change the outputs to the dac clocks, etc. So it wouldn’t sync and you would need to set the dac to audio on the clock settings for it to work correctly. That’s why having a transport that can except the 44.1 at 75 ohms is what you want, for the syncing and not having to change the settings all the time you switch between sources.
