Anyone have experience? Has Roon improved sound wise etc?
welll …that could be fun again
Improvements are made to software over time ? A least we know your reading??
imho Roon doesn’t sound as good as mosaic…BUT here are many options that say it’s the same SQ wise!
They will both sound the same as long as settings are adjusted for no dsp. Both deliver error corrected data to one’s dcs dac. Just as digital photos look the same when copied from one drive to another.
That they are the same is easily proven, as demonstrated by Anup. Of course that doesn’t prove that they sound the same, simply that if they sound different that’s not because they are different.
What are the default settings for Roon when it is “opened up and taken out of the tin” ? Do settings need to be adjusted on a fresh installation to implement DSP free operation?
In Roon, it is important to watch the setting of your signal path.
Lossless signal paths are indicated by a bright purple light, and mean exactly what the name implies: that the stream is going from the file to the device without being modified. Lossless signal paths are pretty boring–there just isn’t much to look at if no-one’s touching the audio stream. This is one of the more interesting ones possible in Roon, because it identifies two separate devices that are involved in the playback chain.
Enhanced signal paths are indicated by a bright blue light. This means that Roon is performing some signal processing steps on the audio because you asked for them. The most common reason for a blue light is that features like Volume Leveling or DSP Engine are in use. This is an example of an “enhanced” signal path, in this case because upsampling is configured in DSP Engine.
If DSP features are not your cup of tea, rest assured that just as in previous versions of Roon, all-digital signal processing is disabled by default, except when it’s required to maintain compatibility with your output device. If you never venture into these screens, nothing is different from how it was before. As always, you can verify bit-perfect playback using Roon’s Signal Path feature.
Also note that the Enhanced Signal Path (thus DSP) can also be triggered/ indicated by Roon through the setting of your dCS product, e.g. if you have set your dCS product to convert PCM to DSD, this will trigger the bright blue Enhanced Signal Path mode.
No argument that “Technically” they are exactly the same. Your response is exactly why many of us who spend 10’s of thousands of dollars on DCS components continue to search for the ultimate sound improvement in network streaming… As good as MinimServer sound is and it is really good, it is also a Pain in the BUTT to configure for many. So hope springs eternal. If Roon or any other program with improved set up and functionality can sound like MinimServer that’s the Holy Grail…IMHO its should not cause any heartburn that the topic keeps coming up again and again. Decades ago I was one of those people who loved when Mac computers came out. Drag and drop loved it! . Learning how to write syntax phrases was not a thing then and it’s not now in 2025 to set up a music library to stream . So for anyone who cares, keep the opinions coming on any improvements or tweaks to the chain that can help Roon or any package that gets down the improved sound path a bit. without spending hours with commas, brackets dots and dashes to set up your music files easily etc etc thanks for your patience…
