RIP Steve Cropper

Another one of the greats leaves us. This clip, from a concert at the Oakland Coliseum in 1970 sums him up for me:

Sad news.
I’m a big fan of Booker T. & The MG’s, and I also liked Steve’s performances in ‘The Blues Brothers’ film.

R.I.P. Steve.

Sorry to learn this. Of course many of us older guys will have had Steve’s playing engraved in our minds as those Stax records were so central to our teenage years.

I was fortunate to have experienced Booker T and the MGs live if only a short set being recorded for TV.

As someone with a rather large record collection (6-7k) my first and foremost love is Southern Soul from the mid 60’s through early 70’s. I would be surprised if Steve Cropper is not the artist which occupies the largest part of my Soul collection. It is difficult to find a Memphis record that does not have his imprint somewhere along the way. A monumental figure not only in music but also in starting the process of racial healing in the US. Same with the Muscle Shoal guys.

RIP
