For my taste, Al Schmitt was certainly among the greatest recording engineers. I love Jazz, and a high percentage of those favorite recordings I consider to sound best were Al’s.

Oh no!! Just saw this and I’m truly saddened to learn this. Al left an indelible mark on recorded music and the world is a better place for him having been in it.
Had the privilege of meeting him a few years ago at Capitol Studios and he was a true gentleman and a pleasure to talk to. I really appreciated the fact that after so many years and having literally seen it all he was still excited about music and the magic he was able to work in the studio.
