The main issue concerning replacement models concerns technological changes which cannot be retrofitted to existing models and are necessary for advancement. However many important advances relate to the unique software basis of dCS components. dCS has always produced units with a long life intended and that during that life it will be possible to incorporate advances later if possible. So, as a new owner, you may find that your unit or units may be updated from time to time and that such updates, aside from those involving hardware changes ,are offered to you free of charge and are incorporated without any need to return the unit to dealer, distributor or factory.
I did say suspect Pete (suspect: have an idea or impression of the existence, presence, or truth of (something) without certain proof).
Regarding naming conventions – maybe splitting hairs – but:
Antonio Vivaldi was an Italian Baroque composer, virtuoso violinist, teacher and cleric.
Giuseppe Verdi was an Italian composer best known for his emotional operas keeping the audience engaged throughout. Influenced by Gioachino Rossini, Gaetano Donizetti, and Vincenzo Bellini, he dominated the Italian opera scene.
Domenico Scarlatti is well-known Italian composer for his operas, oratorios, and sacred music
Gioachino Rossini considered an Italian traditionalist in Classical music, who gained fame for writing 39 operas
Muzio Clementis was born in Rome yet hails as Italian-born British pianist and composer of piano sonatas was his claim to fame, and his celebrated studies for piano are still what most remember him for.
Not to upset the hierarchy on this forum – but it’s just an innocent speculation on my part. I did say my 2 cents (or 0.016 British Sterling).
Best to all,
Bob
In forums or public discussions, we embrace a principle of equality where no rigid hierarchical structure dictates the flow of ideas. Respect and influence are earned through meaningful contributions and the sharing of experience, rather than through a formal ranking system. This approach values the diversity of perspectives, ensuring that every voice, irrespective of its origin or background, is given equal consideration. In this way, we foster a more inclusive and enriching dialogue, where ideas thrive on their merit and the collective wisdom of the community.
If this would be the top notch dCS then only Bach or Mozart (and Handel of course) are valid names
and well… you’re saying “six-figure starting with a 2”…that means a lot of used Vivaldi Apex will hit the market!
If in fact it is 6 figures and starts with a 2, then my Vivaldi APEX will not be one of those hitting the re-sale market.
I connected Innuos to Rossini via USB today and played some tracks (Tellurium Q Silver USB cable). In my setup the LAN streaming is still much better. So if I would ever switch to Vivaldi with USB attached Innuos would this really be better than Rossini*s Ethernet based streaming? Of course the DAC itself is much better but how much SQ is lost then when using USB input?
Switch…You will never regret that move…The Vivaldi is not a little bit better than the Rossini, it is something else, comparison would be futile…
ok,will chat with my dealer…
You forgot Elgar, Purcell, Debussy and Bartok in your list…So, it is true to say that the names are not always after Italian composer…
I bet either on German composer or an Austrian…Unless they choose a more modern composer, Ligeti, Glass…But in 2024, or later, a lady would be classy. Meredith Monk…Monk is easier than Goubaidoulina for a product name and some may think it is the jazzman…So, it will raise many discussion on this forum
Really??? That’s overly optimistic IMO.
Bob
Dunno if it’s better but I do know USB is not the best choice for Vivaldi. In my experience switching from USB to dual AES/EBU (using Vivaldi’s wordclock out into Aurender’s W20SE input) was a revelation
Thanks- but then I’m price wise in the ballpark of an Vivaldi upsampler already …tricky…
The other option is a used DCS Network Bridge into a Vivaldi Dac
Yeah, good point!!! Thought about that…the Network Bridge is a legacy product now. I will not buy a legacy digital product (the technology, firmware, formats, etc change too fast- soon it’s a dead end)
Apart from that, I had to sell my Nagra pre-amp and Nagra PSU and Rossini to fund the Vivaldi. It’s too expensive. Or the other way around- I had to sell Rossini and pay 25kE and keep Nagra…
If you can, buy a pre-loved Vivaldi Apex and Network Bridge and save for years (or sell your children) to get the upsampler
The upsampler is likely to support the main formats in use for a while to come.
Agree (at least I hope so having just invested myself!) However what I hope (and believe) is that while the insides (FPGA architecture) are future proof for a good while to come, the outsides (socketry) aren’t. This is more an issue for the DAC, the Upsampler is imo the right place to house all this legacy ironmongery. C’mon, Dual AES? SPDIF on BNC?? Toslink??? (yes, I know lots of folks connect their TVs to these things, heresy!)
My point being, format changes are not he only factor that can with time render a digital product obsolete.
Reading what other vendors do f.ex. Nagra (with their upcoming Streaming Bridge), Playback Designs, Meitner, Rose Audio, Lumin, Melco etc. it seems that the future is fibre optics.
The next big checkmark for my decision is the HighEnd Munich- until then, I will not open my wallet
Apart from the cost for two cables, I don’t see (hear;-) disadvantages for using dual aes…
No major ones, it works just fine. Yes, double the cable cost (which for some here means +/- fhe cost of a small car), double the socketry real estate etc. but no showstoppers.
My real objection however is more philosophical. Dual AES is an heirloom from dCS’s studio past. How many Bartók/Rossini/Vivaldi users have studios and care about compatibility with professional gear? How many other brands of equipment, if any, does this enable interoperability with? How many users actually use this to connect with anything other than contemporary generation dCS consumer gear?? I absolutely understand that there are some, but how many, and how much cost are they driving into the BoM and the ancillaries for all the rest of us?
My point is this is backward-looking, not forward-looking. While I appreciate backwards-compatibility to a degree, I am more an adherent of the Apple philosophy of drawing a line and moving forwards. I would love to consign all those blue dCS AES cables (I must have about 20!) to the trash can of history along with all the SCART, Component Video, USB-A etc.
Onwards and upwards!
The dual AES capability did not arise only out of professional demand at the time. It was primarily to enable the transmission of sample rates in excess of the ( then) AES 3 protocol maximum of 96kS/s and, importantly and later, SACD without using IEEE1394 ( which was a true PITA believe me).
So although optical connection is the way to go that does seem to relate to network connection rather than inter-unit mating. I guess it can be done but have never come across it outside of Toslink which is data limited.
So we will need to connect different units like transports and therefore backwards compatibility remains.
