New dCS 6 box presentation!

That’s just specmanship and doesn’t relate to better sound.

6 if you include the CD/SACD in 2025.

Best Sir,

Bob

It’s a bit disappointing as the new range is no longer compatible with the previous series V, R and B based purely on the look of the rear of those boxes.

That means we can’t simply buy the new dac and use it with our current transport, upsampler and clock.

As dcs says on its website that only a limited number of items will be made, so it’s not targeting the mass market but the super rich and uber hiend users only.

If I need them in my room in the future, I need to look for a new job soon  . Don’t think there’ll be a wave of vivaldi selling off although I don’t know the rrp of the varese yet.

I don’t think every product needs to be for “me”, and so I applaud this new tech. It looks amazing, seems interesting and exciting and while it’s for the rarified air, I’m not offended lol.

I don’t see a ton of these selling nor do they likely assume they will. It’s already a niche company.

That said, I’d love to hear it!!

I was just at an event and heard $140k McIntosh speakers. Super cool, just not in my realm of possibility.

That said, I love my Lina stack and don’t suffer from upgraditis.

Every company needs a flagship something or other, and this is quite the flagship.

Be curious to see reviews and hear from anyone who actually owns it vs gets a quick demo.

Exactly

Correct me if I’m wrong, however doesn’t this imply the system would be comprised of this stack and two mono amplifiers?

There is no way to incorporate a preamplifier - which will be a problem for those who also run a turntable and phono stage.

Looks like there are two balanced and two single ended analogue outputs per mono dac. So it is possible the entire system could be connected to multiple amps or preamps depending on the control interface.

Time will tell!

Nope, I see no reason to suspect any change from the current architecture in that respect. I anticipate the same output stages with selectable output voltages and either fixed or variable outputs enabling use both with and without a preamp.

The I/O Module is an optional add-on for the Varèse Core, installed in one of the expansion bays. It offers inputs and outputs to allow external sources such as CD Transports, PCs or external servers to be connected to the Varèse system.

• 3x AES inputs, with AES1+2 automatically working as a Dual AES pair when fed with Dual AES data

• Word clock output which automatically changes frequency between 44.1k and 48k depending on the incoming data rate allowing the I/O Module to clock a dCS Transport

• RS232 connector to allow the Varèse system and dCS Mosaic ACTUS to control a connected Rossini or Vivaldi Transport

• USB-B connection for connecting an asynchronous USB source such as a PC or server with a USB output to the Varèse system

Core
The Varèse Core is the heart of the Varèse system. All Varèse components connect directly to the Core, as do external sources such as CD/SACD Transports, USB drives and music servers. The Core carries out the majority of the DSP for the Varèse system, from audio input through to the noise shaping, filtering and conversion that takes place before signals are output to the Varèse Mono DACs. It enables the simplest setup of a dCS system to date whilst supporting the highest levels of measured and audio performance.
• Supports most hi-res music formats and major streaming services
• Flexible architecture allows for future expansion modules
• Utilises patented dCS Tomix technology for exact synchronisation of Mono DACs

MONO DACs
The Varèse Mono DACs redefine state-of-the-art. Improved performance is made possible with an all-new DAC architecture (the Differential Ring DACTM) and clocking protocol (dCS Tomix) plus improvements to analogue circuitry and power supplies. As the Core handles the majority of DSP, the Mono DACs are free to focus on a singular purpose (Digital-to-Analogue conversion) for unprecedented musicality.
• New Differential Ring DAC architecture brings major improvements in both linearity and noise floor
• Next generation power supplies featuring new transformers, regulator topology and secondary circuits provide even lower distortion and less transformer hum
• New dCS Tomix clocking protocol brings unrivalled timing accuracy to Mono DAC configuration

Master Clock
The Varèse Master Clock brings all of the benefits dCS Clock owners will be familiar with – improved imaging, focus and presence – to the Varèse system.
• Twin quartz crystal oscillators run at integers of audio sample rates for optimum jitter performance
• Specifically designed to further elevate the capabilities of the Varèse Music System
• Has the highest accuracy, lowest drift and lowest intrinsic jitter of any dCS clock

USER INTERFACE
The Varèse User Interface works in tandem with the Varèse Remote Control & dCS Mosaic ACTUS app to deliver a rich and immersive set up and playback experience. The User Interface connects with the Varèse Remote Control via Bluetooth for seamless operation. Its full-colour touch screen LCD displays full album art along with detailed track data, play queues and other settings. Display modes and visible information can be tailored to suit listener preferences, with customisable views and adjustable text size.
• Full-colour touch screen brings richer graphic displays and more detailed information
• Bluetooth LE equipped for use with Varèse Remote Control
• Enables compatibility and integration with UPnP control point renderers and servers

REMOTE CONTROL
The Varèse Remote Control is designed to let listeners easily manage playback while remaining immersed in their music. Listeners can adjust volume levels with a turn of the dial or perform a range of operations such as pause, skip, play and mute with a single tap. Its ergonomic design includes focused hot keys and backlit touch icons for an intuitive and tactile experience.
• Capacitive touch glass screen with illuminated icons
• CNC-machined aluminium casework
• Charges via USB-C and connects to Varèse system via Bluetooth LE for maximum convenience

ACTUS
ACTUS is a bespoke interface that delivers audio, control and timing signals between the Varèse components. This means the Varèse system can be connected with a single cable running from the Varèse Core to each unit. This novel protocol, developed by dCS engineers, brings major performance benefits as well as simplified setup, installation and control. ACTUS stands for Audio Control & Timing Unified System. The dCS ACTUS cable is made up of six twisted pairs of copper cable, carrying asynchronous & error corrected audio signals, control signals and a
master clock signal sent via our patented dCS Tomix protocol.

NOW they got me  :heart_on_fire:

(Ok, not price wise…)

How would you connect two mono DAC’s to (for example) our DarTZeel pre?

Don’t you just use one cable per side?

I guess (its beyond my pay grade)
Each Mono DAC has two XLR’s -
if only using one - to the pre?
if using both then to two mono amplifiers eschewing use of a pre?

Image appears to be a CG rendering… wonder what other options will be offered. Like the approach

Hi Gregg,
I’m sorry, I don’t want to appear arrogant enough to know for sure since the product was just released and I don’t own DarTZeel (but I do think they are gorgeous)

I would think that the new cable from the Varese clock would synch both DACs, and then one cable out from each DAC, L and R, to pre- or power, your choice : )

@struts001 and @all2ofme will be the best to ask.

Cheers,
Richard

THE GOAT

I really do not care what Viarese will or will not do. There is no chance that I will ever own such a thing. I don’t worry at all about Bugatti cars or Sunseeker yachts either .

I think it is a fabulous advance and hope for everyone at dCS that it proves to be a big success in its intended market.

Don’t sell yourself short Pete. I could definitely see you in a Bugatti! ; )

Two XLRs (and two RCAs) for 2 (+2) outputs - for instance to a pre and a headphone amp. So you are no longer forced to use single ended for one of them as several of us do today.

12 years or so ago, that’s exactly what I said about the Vivaldi – fast forward, I have a 3 box.
