dCS offer selections for various aspects because for these there is no universally applicable " best". What is best depends on system, room, music genre and your personal preferences. So, as @Bauer says, feel free to experiment. You will find that dCS only provide reasonable choices. So certain filter options are only offered for particular programme resolutions. Note that filter numbers are just that, numbers, and represent the filter position not its type. Please see your user manual.
O.0dBfs offers the least attenuation ( fs = full scale) and is not âbestâ. It is appropriate used in conjunction with a preamp as they also have volume controls and there is no requirement for duplication and 0.0dBfs effectively removes the control. Use without a preamp ( direct connection) would be impractical however as if set at 0.0dBfs the system would be flat out all of the time. With your amp having 275 W/channel ( 8 ohms) or 450W/Channel ( 4 ohms) you would probably damage your speakers and your hearing if played for any length of time flat out unless you live in an auditorium or have the worldâs most insensitive speakers.
That could be problematic for the amplifierâŚ
I suggest caution.
EDIT:
And also potentially problematic for your loudspeakers and ears, as @PAR has said.
Precisely, @PAR
You set the volume with pre amp.
Not true Nick, this is a widely held misconception. The dCS digital volume control is implemented on oversampled data and loses no resolution at all until below -40dB.
If your preamp has an analog volume control (or a poorly implemented digital one) this will probably result in a higher noise level, and depending on which of the aforementioned it is, reduced dynamic range or a loss of linearity (or both).
Please see this FAQ on the website.
Dcs Rossini â> Soulution 727 pre amp â> Soulution 717 power amp.
The 727 accept till 9 Volt pp in input.
Rossini out 6 volt and volume 100%.
I set the volume with pre amp 727.
No noise, no clipping, high detail, high dynamic, great sound.
This is my configuration and work so good.

I have a Rossini apex player and used to connect it directly to my ch precision a1.5 power amp using balanced xlr and I found it sounded best with a 2v output for the DAC . For fun I placed my benchmark hpa 4 headphone amp / pre amp in between the DAC and power amp and have been very pleasantly surprised by the uplift in performance - a little more detail , the whole presentation seems lifted and the bass a little deeper . I wasnât expecting this but the pre amp has remained in the system and I am Now curious what an even better pre amp will do to my system .
Ok Andrew, so if the soundlevel is good at -20dB with 2V line output, itâs right in the middle, itâs first above -40dB you may lose resolution?
Yes, above -40dB in attenuation/below -40dB in level. The output voltage should be selected to allow the attenuator to be kept in this range.
