I am trying to make a backup from my N17Z/2 to a Toshiba USB HDD 2TB. drive.
The drive was formatted in Melco and backup started. This continued to progress until 11,718/21,392(files?) was reached. Then all seems to have seized up. The display of Melco still shows a flashing full point as if it is writing to the HDD drive but the blue LED of the drive has gone out. Further none of the front panel buttons functions and I cannot even switch it off. When I touched one of the selection buttons a timer icon appeared over the progress bar but that is all. It has been like this for several hours.
Any ideas? As I cannot switch it off I could now only remove the cord to power down. However, is this advisable in its “locked” state with the HDD drive still attached?
Thanks for any ideas.
Edit: I have now been in contact with Melco support which should sort things out.
The USB Hard Disk may have failed or the data copy hit bad sectors which has stalled/interrupted the backup. Have you unplugged the USB Disk to see if it lets the Melco sort itself out?
After some point you’ll have to pull the mains cable I reckon, maybe leave overnight then if still locked up power down, leave a wee while then power up.
I have the N1A but haven’t had this issue happen yet.
Thanks. I did indeed have to pull out the power cord. However Melco have since instructed me to access the support option in the menu and select “Incompatible Characters” ( thinks: could be me ). Then restart the backup which is proceeding as I write. I estimate it may finish at around 22:00 tonight.
The idea is to create something to load my N5 from when it arrives next week if I have to let go of the N17H/2 at the same time ( it being PX’d).
Glad it’s sorted, sounds like it came across some file name problems with songs/folders it got confused by, characters like /<>\ can’t be used in Windows, maybe similar thing with Melco.
I bought the N1 to head to head Minim/Mosaic against my Roon Rock Intel NUC/QNAP+Synology NAS boxes. Age likely playing its part as I push towards 60 but I could hear no meaningful difference between the 2.
I do like the Melco, very well put together piece of kit. Not sure if a new generation unit will sound better or the same if only using as a Minim/NAS.
How do you use the Melco - USB to DAC or as a Minim Server/NAS?
It is as a MinimServer/ NAS. Controversially I also have the Melco S100 network switch. I do not understand how it works but the home demonstration was, for me, an instant and unambiguous hit.
I’ve tried a fair few things out - Cisco switches, network filters, various makes of fibre converters, sfp etc and along with a good friend concluded there were small gains to be made optimising the network, especially with regard to power and possible noise ingress. Read plenty of posts about switches and the S100 seems well regarded and often said to improve things.
I have dedicated mains and network for the AV/Hi-Fi room, separates it from the rest of the house which has a lot of work IT, Solar, Freezers etc. I own an IT company and mainly WFH. We use Ubiquiti gear everywhere so that’s what’s in the garage Comms Cab, from a Ubiquiti switch SFP socket I have a DAC to FMC to Cat6 to Rossini. Ticks all the boxes and doesn’t make anything worse.
