Hi Mike. I am really making my comment because that is the connection architecture suggested by Melco and is the reason for the Player Port which allows direct connection from Melco to Rossini without an intervening switch . I will make no comment as to any subjective SQ claim that there may be.
If you are running the player port back though the same switch then i canât see the point in doing so.
I would say it should be like this if you want to use the player port :- into switch, then from switch to melco and then player port to rossini/dac.
If you want to run everything through the switch then you only need to run one cable from the switch to the melco and one from the switch to the rossini.
This is what i do with my PhoenixNet switch as i found it sounded better like this rather than the player port.
Both the PLAYER and LAN ports are connected to the Nordost switch. I remember when I had only one of them connected, that I could not control the N5 over the Mosaic app.
I use the N5 only as a music library and the Rossini as the streamer.
I think that I originally tried the Rossini to N5 to Nordost switch route, but was not able to control the N5 OVER Mosaic app.
Update: I connected the LAN port of the N5 to the switch and the PLAYER port to the Rossini and the Rossini was not visible on the Mosaic app. I wonder why is that?
It should be as i ran my melco like that for years.
But with most things to do with melcoâs it all about the settings and having the right things switched on
Any suggestions which Melco settings I should change?
Configure the Player Port to Bridged mode.
Settings-Network-Player Port, but then the only options I get are ON or OFFâŚno bridged mode option to tick
Seems like the N5 Software is different. Youâll have to ask one of the guys who owns on N1/N5, or ask your Melco Dealer.
(Iâve got the N1ZH which has Bridge Mode).
Hiya Pete
So Iâm wondering why Iâve just bought the Melco Switch? ![]()
If I didnât use any of the streaming services and I only ever used the stored music on the N5, the only time Iâd need the internet is for Metadata and the use of the Mosaic App. I that correct?
Me too on my N5âŚ
Correct
If you only play stored files from the melco you dont even need to connect it to the network.
You can control it from the front buttons but it is a pain to do it this way.
Cheers Dunc
So when people say, âThe Switch added a tighter bass and clearer vocals etcâŚâ, are they referring to Qobuz/Tidal, their stored music on a server, or both? (Innuos, Melco etcâŚ)
It should really only be when streaming but then what do i know.
A switch might still do something if the packet data is running through it from the melco or it could be that you just like it better than say what the player port does.
I run my melco through my switch then into the dac rather than the player port.
I have switched the player port off and just have a cheap cable connected between it and my switch.
That is interesting DuncanâŚYou preferred not to use the Player Port? Was that to do with SQ, or something else?
At present, Iâm using a Direct Attach cable from my S100 Switch, to the N5.
Yes i thought it sounded nicer when streaming going directly into the upsampler rather than through the melco.
Obviously you have the newer melco to me and things might be different now.
You can only try and see if you first feel you hear a difference and if so if the difference better or worse.
I thought youâd have the N1 by now? ![]()
No
I hardly use my stored music these dayâs as i find streaming it is just as good most of the time.
I have even considered selling the melco or moving it off the rack and under the stairs connected to the ee8.
