Sure can understand being reluctant as it got somehow common to claim something on forums without having even heard or compared things.
I have a background of more than 25 years in High End audio, so got some first hand experience.
Many users worldwide (just have a look at various reviews and user feedback) prefer JPlay over Roon, me included. Also the app experience on mobile and tablet is way better than Roon which is still dealing with bugs. I am a Roon lifetime user too, have been following its development since the early days on too.
High margin Recurring Revenue stream.
Unfortunately, to put it politely, not everyone knows what they don’t know (there’s a technical term for that
)
That would mean providing a streaming service such as an “OctaveAudioStream” then, not providing a new media software.
But let’s admit they wish to create a new streaming service, that’d be a totally different story then where their only catalogue would not suffice.
And they’d better promote their new streaming service to existing media player than doing their own based on Qobuz for now…
Nope, still not getting the point sorry…

Have spent a few hours with the PSA Maestro system. Run it on a MacBook Pro for now. It does sound a bit better than Roon on my rig. But so do Qobuz Connect and JPlay. Enough better that I would drop Roon? Nope; Roon has other benefits, MetaData, Tidal integration, etc. I do like the user interface better than JPlay though, so might drop JPay and keep Maestro. It’s still really in Beta testing. A new toy to play with.
I think that recurring revenue stream just means that and has nothing to do with streaming. It simply denotes that Maestro creates a a regular source ( or stream) of income. Presumably by charging for the application and/or a subscription.
As for any level of margin which is applied, that depends upon what they think is viable.
Ok, thanks Pete.
Now, I’m still skeptical regarding how they can eventually compete with Roon, Audirvana (for monthly paid subscription) and with other free competitors on a market which is a niche within a niche.
Let’s not forget Hifi brand’s solutions either (Mosaic, BlueOS, MIND, …)
How to hope gain money here without a dramatic differentiator?
Exactly. However there are numerous brands of washing product, they all do more or less the same thing yet survive.
I guess it is more to do with consumer perception rather than logic.
Well that is exactly what product development and marketing is about. Creating a compelling product, that exceeds in one or more criteria compared to market competitors, and sets the benchmark
So when Roon is focusing on Meta data, multi zone playback, Qobuz Connect & Co. for maximum convenience, Maestro aims for the best sound quality. This might not appeal to anybody of course. But in the segment of HiFi/High-End this definitely matters a lot. And for example already some Grimm MU1/MU2 users are already preferring Maestro over Roon.
That is the advantage of an open standard like UPnP that various devices can easily be integrated.
@Pdave just for context what dCS equipment are you running?
I know people who prefer coffee over tea. Go figure! ![]()
I went for a dCS Master Clock, and currently evaluating about streamer/DAC.
Haha sure, was actually just trying to say other users that appreciate a certain, higher level enjoy Maestro already, so the dCS users with some of the finest taste should be able to like it too ![]()
You are promoting Maestro, bashing Roon. Based on some people saying they prefer it…
What is your agenda?
Well I see why it may feel like “ringing a bell to some” ![]()
But I have been using Roon since the early days (including lifetime sub) but as many users that have been using Roon over a similar time encountered quite a lot of problems, and it’s just that I am very passionate about JPlay, and even more so of Maestro.
But maybe Roon finally is able to get some believe back with their new release - we will see ![]()
Good luck then with your dCS Master Clock ![]()
Thanks - maybe we can meet at High End Vienna also. Love to see more dCS stuff ![]()
How are you currently listening to Maestro - through the Master Clock?
Got Maestro running on a Macbook M4, for the rest just see here Does anyone have a Network Acoustics tempus switch in their dCS based system? - #19 by Pdave
I wanted to share my experience with the Maestro app and see if others are running into similar issues.
I downloaded the app recently and started a subscription. My first impression was actually very positive — to my ears it sounded better than Roon and possibly even better than dCS Mosaic, which I didn’t expect.
Unfortunately, things went downhill pretty quickly.
I started having problems with my library, where Maestro couldn’t find a number of files. Then it stopped seeing my device altogether. After some time it did recognize the device again, but at that point it simply wouldn’t play any music.
I’ve contacted support a couple of times but haven’t received any response so far, which is disappointing.
At this point I’m seriously considering cancelling my subscription. For a paid service, this level of instability and lack of support just isn’t acceptable.
Has anyone else experienced similar issues? Or found a reliable fix?
