I’ve added in language translation functionality to the forum. This adds a globe icon to the settings under each post on the forum, which will translate the post for you. This should hopefully make multi-lingual threads on the forum a bit smoother.
There is a hard limit on how many characters will be translated by the forum per month, after which the translation will stop functioning and you’ll receive an error message, so do me a favour and don’t all go translating everything you see to verify it works - leave it for posts where you actually need it to work!
By default, this is limited to users with a trust level of at least 1, which is the vast majority of forum users here. Bit of a safeguard to stop us hitting the limit too quickly.
Hi James. I am not sure what is happening but the new globe icon is not appearing on postings newer than made about 9 hours ago. At least that is what I see.
Good spot both, something I wasn’t aware of before. The translation plugin relies on some metadata attached to each post which stores the detected language for that post. That metadata only starts being added to each post when the plugin is enabled. The plugin then checks a user’s selected local language against the language of the post to determine if translation is needed.
Because that metadata doesn’t exist for older posts as the plugin wasn’t enabled, it shows the button for all of them.
So, in future you should only see the button appear for posts that aren’t in your local language. Users can set their language in Preferences → Interface.
