Interesting new toy

I usually listen to my music via Roon. As all SACD are ripped.

Today is the day 1 of the annual HK Hifi Show and found an interesting toy - a real SACD transport for less than 1.5k USD

I hooked up this Onix XST20 (ok it’s Chinese by Shanling) via BNC to my Rossini Apex.

Hey presto! It works.

SACD as DSD and MQA CD all working

For someone that need a backup source and not willing to go full hog dCS transport, this is a little gem.

Can’t fault its quality for the money either

I looked at one of them, just a shame it doesn’t have a clock input that works with dCS, as that would be perfect if it did.

That yes. No word clock input. But for that kind of money this is really just a toy.

I know exactly what you are saying as i did the same with my latest cd transport. Only no sacd play back with mine, but it only cost £499, but it works with the dCS clock.

But keep us informed as you go as interested in how it goes.

May I just add that what some recent products that I have seen have seen ( not necessarily silver dis players) have 10 mHz clock inputs. These cannot be used to synchronise the unit with dCS DACs.

Roon files will beat this but somehow when you hold the physical disc and the cover … feel more connected to the music?

Maybe it’s my age? Old school?

This one has no clock input. Word clock or 10MHZ both no.

Thank’s @gordlau for posting this, I was researching this transport especially because it has SACD capabilities, so I can use it with my Lina DAC.
Since the Lina Clock only has two clock outputs, the fact that the Onix XST20 doesn’t have a Clock Input is not important for my use case. And it’s more price appropriate :v:

Keep the feedback coming :+1:

I thought native DSD output is only through i2s connection with regards to the Onix

As far as I can tell @imprezap2, that is correct. Only DOP in the other outputs (AES, SPDIF, etc)

Correct
Digital Outputs

Optical / Coaxial / AES / BNC:

CD Playback 44.1 kHz
SACD Playback DSD64 via DoP or D2P

I2S:

CD Playback 44.1 kHz

SACD Playback native DSD64

USB:

CD Playback 44.1 kHz

SACD NOT Supported

Yes, had a look at this transport also, pity dCS has no i2s inputs

We can ‘debate’ native DSD via I2S vs DoP in terms of quality differences (in the realm of DSD 64, there aren’t any!)…

Worth a read. Interesting piece on DSD and DoP - #7 by James

Before this transport exist, I rely on geerfab d.fob with a universal player (in essence a Blu-ray player) for this duty. This Onix transport doing much better job tbh.

And yes DSD output via BNC/AES and SPID/F would be DoP. No DSD output via USB.

I quite enjoyed spinning a few SACDs or MQA CDs with this so far. Perhaps the ‘novelty’ of re engaging with physical mediums

My main listening mode is still ripped files via Roon. This side of the system is far more sorted. Guess fair comparison is not possible

This transport gives me the ‘convenience’ of checking out the music before ripping them into files.

I2S includes word clock sync

There’re whole loads of stuff written about this transport. Worth digging in if interested

Any comparison to the sound quality of a Oppo or Reavon?

Hard to compare in terms of direct comparison (myself anyway)

I did have an oppo bd103 mainly for ripping SACD. I used to extract DSD signal with a geerfab D.BoB, if the oppo serves as a transport. I would say the onix beat that hands down.

Though my main listening would be Roon n files.

I didn’t compare directly in terms of straight PCM though.
