Future for audiophiles?

Integrating read.

Very interesting read tbh. I always think that I’m an odd one in this hobby as I’m too young compared to my fellow audiophile friends who are at least 10+ years older than me. My old friend who’s been in this hobby for nearly 50 years is as old as my Dad.

I started with hifi when I was just 16 years old and went deep with serious hifi when I was 25 years old. Now, at 40, I’m still seeing myself very young and knowing little about this hobby compared to many other veteran audiophiles.

The article raised some decent points about sound quality via streaming. I’ve experienced that a lot when listening to music while driving. It sounds worse on my system sometimes with the same track and I can’t explain why it sounds better with the car.

And actually in many many occasions, I feel more emotional and engaging with music when listening in my car. Maybe my analytical brain just switched off a bit and allowed me to enjoy music, pure music and just that.

I used to work as an auditor and before the pandemic, I had to travel a lot So no time for the system. I mostly listened to the music while driving so that might be the case.

Even after coming home, I still had to work until late not to mention that I tended to stay in a hotel and only came home after a long drive in the weekend. It’s the norm for auditors even today when everything is back to normal after the pandemic.

Fortunately, These days have long gone for me and now I can wfh and listen to my system several times a week with my current job and having more time with my family, especially the kids.

Most of the younger guys that I know truly don’t bother with hifi. They can go to concerts and listen to the music via their headphones and that’s enough for them. Not sure how the future looks like but it seems the article is correct in many points raised.

The world of head-fi is thriving with young folks. There’s a ton of high quality gear out there and a very active community around it.

That article is based on YouTube data. I would not rely on that at all (a Krell amp review at that). I’m a gray haired “audiophile” and I don’t watch YouTube at all. Any reviews I read are written.

And in any case, I’m a music lover first, and spend more time discovering music than audio gear.

In any case, the article has the type of headline (metrics, drama) and copy (bombastic) that is intended to draw eyes, clicks and links rather than inform. That’s how these things go online.
