On a DCS Rossini apex, I’ve been using the DSD setting…. Then was reading Serinus’ review of Rossini apex randomly and noticed his settings were for DXD…
So out of interest, set it to DXD. What a difference! Much more musical, natural. Just gave it that missing edge. I was surprised at the difference, as I find the filter settings are marginal at best.
Rossini upsampling can be changed for PCM-based files only.
The options are to upsample PCM to either DSD, 2xDSD (or DSD128) or DXD (as @Rcg412 noted above).
This does not apply to data files already in DSD format. These are handled natively without upsampling for both DSD64 and DSD128, i.e., input data remains in DSD64 or DSD128.
Note: The factory setting on the Rossini when delivered from dCS is to upsample PCM to DSD. While this is of course a matter of personal taste, I would not consider this fact to be random or accidental.
That decision is a good few years old now, RG, and long overtaken by events such as support for DSDx2, APEX, etc. I wouldn’t interpret any significance into it, or any other default setting for that matter. It really is as simple as that when we offer a choice there is no ”right” answer.
I get the point about APEX Andrew, but still find this statement, respectfully and pleasantly, hard to believe.
Virtually every company releases product with the setting it believes most users will enjoy most, and this is the result of extensive internal testing.
As one example, the dCS Rossini manual states this:
“Our listening tests concluded that Map 1 gives the most musical results, but you have a
choice.”
And, accordingly, the default factory setting on Rossini is Mapper 1
It is obviously in dCS’s best interests to release every product with default settings it thinks will sound great to most listeners
My system: A Lina dac and clock (BJC Belden 4694R) w/AG Yeung EF130 power filters; Balanced output via Gothic Audio Nublu XLR into a Naim NC NAP250 into Dynaudio Heritage Specials via NACA5 and Dynaudio Sub 6. Room is 14’x20’.
My settings are DXD, Filter 4, Mapper 3. Output set to 0.6V (key to success). Anything else gives something up to my ears. Good news is, I seek nothing more than this.
Blessings and thanks to dCS for providing this option, if a bit burried in the bunch.
Don’t be afraid to tickle those transistors. You never know what will happen.
I’m clear about 0.6V. I can run the Lina wide open on good recordings without the room breaking up. My sweet spot is -24dB to around -9db. -6db up is rockin’ out.
The Naim amp is spec’d to have 2V input. To my ears, 2V, or higher gives a distortion that lends a noticably more hard and forward sound. I don’t know why 0.6V works better to my ears, it just does.
