CD transport options for Bartok

I also took for the test Jay’s CDT2-MK3 in black, a very powerful device!

Did you compare the built-in streamer and Jay’s cd-transport? How is it for you?

What MK version do you have? How long did it take to burn-in, did you find any improvements?

Which clock mode do you use Audio or Master? I listen with Master, but I don’t hear any artifacts. Am I correct in this case to use it better?

Congratulations.

The issue with elderly optical disc spinners is that the OPU ( laser unit) is effectively consumable and will not last infinitely. Eventually a replacement for the unit will be necessary. The sourcing of the part is already limited and as time goes by the ability to find it will diminish further.

Checking online there are CDM 12.4 laser units being offered. If I were you I would buy one now and keep it until needed. The cost may be reasonable now and you would have one against future failure when you may find replacement difficult.

How did you like the jays audio?

Quite worthy for the price. But at this time I am no longer using dCS.

Resurrecting an old thread, and not related to a transport for a Bartok, but for my legacy Purcell/Delius - I recently swapped my Audiomecha Mephisto transport (which previously beat a Micromega Duo [not recapped so far] to my ears) with a Metronome Technologie T20 Signature Transport - im truly amazed how much better it is, never imagined a simple transport could make so much difference!

Oh, and I had to fit a new laser unit to get working, so good for a while yet

does your setup with CD sound better than streaming?

Yes - it was always a bit better, bigger gap now. My streaming is done via Pi4 with Allo Digione HAT, and I only play Internet radio or online services. Guess I really should try some local CD rips, have never done so since getting my dCS kit.

Thanks, Richard

That’s a good idea.

I was pleased when I did so (I used dBpoweramp).

I’d suggest you have a closer look at TEAC VRDS-701T.
Digital output is SPDIF coax and optical.
Sync input is 10MHz 50 Ω.
Price approx. CHF 1k6, USD 2k2

This is not a wordclock frequency but a master clock frequency. it cannot be used to synchronise a Bartok and a CD transport. Further it is 50 ohm whereas all dCS clock inputs require 75 ohms.

Thanks Pete, but that is nothing new to me. I’m pretty well aware of it.
But since I own a Mutec REF10 SE120 and a Mutec MC-3+ USB, at least I could sync the Bartok. :grinning:

This looks interesting - includes a word clock input

here is the product page. Says it supports 75 ohm word clock input. Seems like this would work with my Rossini clock correct?

You could be right. it seems to have two clock inputs, one for a 44.1 kHz wordclock and one for a master clock 10mHz input. So the first one appears to fit the bill. My reservation is that the online manual seems to be only in Chinese characters which makes things less straightforward to verify.

Do note though, contrary to Darko’s statement about “auto-adapts to 50 Ohm or 75 Ohm connections” in the review, the manual states that the “Clock Load” (impedance) is set from the settings menu, it’s not auto.

Thanks for flagging. I caught that as well in the manual. Overall it looks like a good product. Although their boast about low jitter doesn’t look all the impressive on their charts

Finally tried this last weekend - FLAC based files I ripped using EAC, played via Moode running on an Rpi4 with the Digione board outputting digi into the Purcell. Same results as previously - lovely and dynamic, but missing stage depth (imaging) compared to playing the native CD. CD remains my best playback source (given I haven’t played any vinyl for 2 years or so now :)).

That’s interesting.

I no longer ‘spin’ CD’s, so I can’t make a comparison, but I’m happy with what I hear (including stage depth/imaging) from the ripped versions of my CD collection.
