HiFi News—When Worlds Collide: Bose Bought McIntosh (and Sonus faber)
Is it too soon to make a waveguide joke?
Forbes also covering the story:
Wow, can’t claim I saw that one coming!
While I do not believe that Bose branded speakers are now considered “audiophile,” I have always had affection for the company because of the quality and aesthetic of its products, and because it was founded by a long-time professor, Dr. Amar Bose, at MIT, my Alma Mater.
Amar Bose continued to teach at MIT even as the company grew to become a successful international brand, and so an MIT student could take an acoustics class taught Dr. Bose himself while I studied there.
Along the way, as is known by many on this board, leading automakers started offering Bose speakers as an option in their vehicles, including and especially Porsche, most notably in the 911.
Since it’s founding, Bose has almost exclusively been led by MIT graduates, including the current CEO, Lila Snyder, who earned a Ph.D. there.
Bios for both are below:
Nice, I never wanted these brands in my living room, but in my car, instead of Bose, it will be nice…
In my “formative” years I was quite heavily into car audio and McIntosh did some pretty insane in-car audio kit … waaaaaaay out of my budget but I had a couple of friends who ran ‘proper’ car audio shops or were into the trade side of ‘proper’ car audio here in the UK and so I did get to play with some of the more esoteric kit…
