Audio on UK National Radio!

I don’t know about countries outside of then UK but over here audio in the sense of home hi-fi is never mentioned in general. Further most people outside fellow audiophiles seem to have no idea that the subject even exists. So I was amazed that BBC radio 4 devoted an entire programme to it today.

The main topic was the new brand Fell who are making British designed and manufactured units . Very much outside of the market end that dCS supply and forum members occupy, it was great publicity. Even so I could hear the presenter’s voice register surprise that “entry level” meant £600 for their amplifier :grinning: I imagine that “audio system” means everything for <£175 from Argos ( part of a supermarket chain) to most listeners.

The interviewee from Fell was from the family owned retail audio business Peter Tyson (familiar to UK hobbyists ) for whom this is anew venture. However ,much of the interview was not product specific and excellent for this industry. He was clearly knowledgable and was careful to frame his comments so that people to whom all of this is foreign could understand. So he didn’t jsut say that he makes an amplifier but that it is where you plug in your turntable or streamer and loudspeakers. He also covered the fact that the UK has more expensive brands that are respected throughout the world ( also probably unknown to most “civilians” ). He isted several but dCS was missing :slightly_frowning_face:. He also managed to mention that streaming services like Spotify are compressed, which may be news to some.

Anyway it was the first audio orientated thing that I have come across in UK media since BBC Radio London discontinued their sound quality focussed programme in the 1970s.

If you unhave BBC Sounds it is “You and Yours” midday 22/05/25.
