Rossini arrives in a couple of weeks and I wondered if anyone could suggest which Synology NAS I should get to replace my old DS213+ which won’t run MinimServer?
I might also consider running Audirvana on it but my main aim is to optimise it for the Rossini with the Mosaic app.
QNAP or Synology are both excellent makes, I’ve screen capped the 2 bay options so you can Google them. I’d go for a DS-225+ for the better performance and upgradable memory. I own several QNAP and Synology NAS boxes used for business, movies and music and also look after loads at work. Synology interface is the nicest to use. The new QNAP TS-262a would be worth considering. Make sure you keep their software OS/Apps up to date.
QNAP HS-264 is one of the very rare NAS without a (noisy) fan.
Equipped with two Samsung SATA SSD QVO 870 8TB it’s absolutely quiet.
(Used with NWB and Vivaldi Upsampler.)
@Nick, Audirvana is not NAS ( NAS=Network Attached Storage) which is where music files are stored and which ( in most of our cases) are retrieved and played via Mosaic. Audirvana is a music player but still needs some kind of additional storage for local files of music.
I agree with other members that a new Synology or QNAP unit will be fine and will run MinimServer. There are some custom made for audio NAS/player units out there too but I won’t go there as they tend to be comparatively costly and no budget has been given.
@Jsoundz , If the NAS is to be in the same room as listening takes place then due attention should be paid to noise levels both of the NAS itself but also of the drives which are a usually a separate item. You may need to do a bit of web research.
Te physical relationshp i.e. distance between NAS and DAC is not usually important unless noise from the NAS ( fan and/or drives) is an issue. Then the further away the better. The maximum length of the cable linking the two is 100m.
I had my old netgear nas attached by ethernet in the stereo stack for years. When I replaced it, I put the asustor in the closet with my laser printer a switch and a couple of older devices for time machine backups. The only thing on the asustor is all my music going back to the invention of the internet(tongue in cheek). My old nucleus + is on that switch. I notice NO change of any kind with the Asustor being in the closet far from the Vivaldi dac.
I was thinking I wanted to stay with Synology but I like the look of the Asustor Flashtor 6. I’ve not had any mechanical drives fail in my Synology but logic tells me solid state drives will be better in the long run.
I went from tired DS212+ to vigorous DS220+ and am very happy.
Sits in my study 8m of Cat 6A away from my switch and then a short hop to Rossini. Runs cool and quiet but no sonic advantage to having it closer and some to having it further away. I use a couple of quiet and efficient WD Red drives.
The Melco/DELA units can be used exclusively as NAS and have ethernet ports and ISB, They can also be used as full music players, However I think most do not like their siftware much in this role.
Do the idea is to use only as NAS. I do this for which it is excellent and completely silent,
Used with dCS it will need to have MinimServer added. This is done by downloading the dedicated Melco version to a thumb drive which is then transferred to the Meco byUSB. there will be online instructions. I expect . There was when I di it with my first Melco but I don’t remember the details. The UK importer installed it on my recent model. ( N5).
The original Japanese installed server software is not really compatible with Mosaic and will produce unpredictable results like being unable to distinguish similar titles or providing incorrect artwork for the album.
However as good as the units are they are costly compared to general IT server units.
