ADOT...Is it really necessary?

On the hunt for a LPS from my Melco S100/2. Looking at the PLiXiR (12V) which retails at around £570, or the MK2 for £750. I also have a ADOT fibre Converter (5V)
A PLiXiR Dual Stack 12V and 5V is £1750! :open_mouth: This works out around £1,000 for a LPS for the £400 ADOT. That’s bonkers!

I was just reading an ADOT thread from 2022 which was most interesting. So I’m wondering, is an ADOT or any other Fibre Converter really necessary?

Thanks

Necessary? In a word … unlikely.

The reason for adopting fibre connection is to ensure galvanic isolation. This results in immunity to parasitic noise. However do you actually suffer from such noise or are you subject to a symptom of audiophilia nervosa () caused by what you may have read? I daresay that certain environments might cause issues e.g. living in NYC or next to a heavy industrial plant. However you are living in beautiful Norfolk, UK.

Even given that this possibility may have a slight chance of affecting you , reading Melco’s bumph does not indicate any preference for fibre connection , in fact I seem to recall the converse reading the about C1.One important question is whether the fibre converter itself adds noise? There is a reputation of this in general albeit ADOT units are held to be benign in this respect ( I think it is their USP). it may also be that, like dCS units, Melco units may be designed to offer galvanic isolation in the first place though I would need further information.

I It’s easy to check any case. Remove ADOT and substitute with some decent cable from router to Melco, as I believe this is your connection in question. I use Melco C100 for this incidentally, but I am sure there are cheaper alternatives. Hear any negative difference? I would reverse the exercise a couple of times over a few days to try to ensure that imagination does not have an upper hand

I would just point out that the Varèse Core is equipped with an RJ45 Ethernet port and no SFP receptacle. That decision was not made on cost grounds (you’ll have to trust me on that one). Our engineers understand galvanic isolation, take it very seriously and implement ”dCS grade” regimes to ensure it where it matters.

there was a nice post by someone from that explains the how robust the dCS implementation of galvanic isolation is throughout the range. Can’t seem to find it, but it sounds like we have nothing to worry about!

One can purchase a pair of SFP units and a cleanish psu for very little if you want to experiment. I tried it and it made no difference to the sound

Thanks Pete…That’s very interesting.
I have also recently purchased the C100.

Funnily enough, the ADOT failed today!:astonished: Alan is sending me another one. I have also ordered a PLiXiR MK2 LPS along with the Statement cable. So I will try with and without ADOT.

Thanks for your input.
I’m wondering if this is the same with Melco products, as I have the N1?

Thanks Andrew👌

It was in fact Alan that advised, that the ADOT would be a valuable asset to rid noise from the system.
Am I correct Pete, in saying that you use the C1 Direct Attach Cable, via the SFP ports on the Switch and N5, and Ethernet cable for all other LAN connections?

Correct. However as I think that I mentioned earlier, the C1 cable was a small part of a large overall expenditure at the time and was selected simply because I was interested, could afford it and Melco seem to prefer it rather than as the outcome of anything more rational.
