Such a shame Franck Black fired again Pixies’ bassist…
Paz Lenchantin really brought a new freshness to this album and the one before (Beneath The Eyrie), making grow again my interest for the Pixies that had totally vanished after Kim Deal’s departure…

A new album from The The, cool! Great catch Jonathan, spinning it now.
I have a question! It is for someone with a detailed knowledge of either (a) the photography of Sabine Weiss (not likely, I think), or (b) central Paris (more likely). It arose from me listening first to:
Not jazz exactly (despite the fantastic set of musicians), but a great album I still listen to every few months. For some reason it makes me nostalgic for California.
On this album is a track “Summer of '42”, which (to my surprise) is a theme composed by Michel Legrand for a 1970s film. He, when younger, did some jazz recordings with a roster of great players including Miles Davis. Here are the front and rear covers of that album:
and:
I think the statue, of which just a little can be seen at far left on the rear cover picture, is the same one as on the front cover.
Here’s my question: can anyone recognise exactly where the pictures were taken (I believe, because of the statue, that it is the same place)? I will be going to Paris next week and would like to visit the spot. All suggestions are welcome.
Took a bit of figuring out but I’m pretty sure it is outside the St. Germain Odéon (Métro: Odéon). The statue is of Georges Danton. Here is the closest I could get to that angle in Google Street view:
I think the photo is taken from the top of the steps down to the Métro roughly by the front of the bus. The Pharmacy, visible in the background of the second shot, is still there!

Back to it: after I reported the clicks and pops issue I have with the DSD 128 version I bought recently, Frans de Rond from SoundLiaison reached out to me.
He told me they were going to evaluate other DSD software converters to try to fix these issues they sometimes have.
In the meantime Frans gave me access to the DXD version which is very perfect! Great support!
“Took a bit of figuring out but I’m pretty sure it is outside the St. Germain Odéon (Métro: Odéon).”
Thankyou Struts! The statue looks very plausible, although the bottom section of the pedestal doesn’t seem quite identical. But that could be due to the blurryness of the picture. And more than 60 years have passed since the album cover photo was taken, so there may have been changes.
I will go there next weekend and report back on what I find. You can’t keep your head in the sand all the time if you can help with this kind of thing!
The statue including pedestal is completely unchanged. I assume you mean the first shot. If you zoom in you will see there is a person in a raincoat of the same colour standing in front of it making the lower portion appear a different shape.
I had a friend that lived near there and I passed that statue heading down into the Métro countless times. I am quite sure that’s the place. Compare the windows and the balconies above the pharmacy in the second shot, exactly the same 66 years on.
Aha! I didn’t see that there was a man + raincoat until you pointed him out. That explains what I thought was a shape difference. I will try and take some pictures from the same angles. Thanks again.
