Theyâre great memories for me tooâŠ
You and me both!
Listening to this good oldie from them while I just discovered they released a new album today !
Thanks for the heads up @keiserrg. But how are the performances? Unfortunately IME great recordings and great performances donât always intersect. I found a review online which was gushingly positive. The I realised he had written it himself.
I am listening to Vol. 1 on Qobuz right now (that seems to be the only album in this series available to stream) and while he no doubt has fine technical ability I find some of his interpretation decisions quite frankly bizarre.
Like his choice of tempi in the first movement of the F major where he accelerates and brakes like a car running on âkangaroo petrolâ. Seems like heâs doing it simply to be different and for me at least it destroys the beauty of the piece rather than revealing any âhidden voicesâ. Compare with, for instance, Mitsuko Uchida, and youâll see what I mean.
Whatâs your take on Vol. 5?
Nick Heywood & Haircut One Hundred: Greatest Hits
New Wave, Pop/Rock
RCA Camden - 3rd March 1997
16/44.1
Really like their new album.
The main title and record cover are a big wink: the two first band members both being shrinks before musicians
Regarding record releases of the week, as an Electronica/French-Touch lover, today is my day !
Hi Struts,
If someone is writing their own reviews, or worse, using ChatGPT to do so, they better not post it here or Pete will come after them! ; )
Re: your question, unfortunately I donât have your classical music acumen, and I donât pretend that I can compare the different interpretations of the many (many!) talented pianists.
I subscribe to the idea, most frequently attributed to Louis Armstrong, that âthere are only two kinds of music: good and bad.â
To my humble taste, this album is the former.
Separately, could you pls share any recent thoughts on your systemâs harmony/synergy with the Vivaldi and Franco Serblinâs Ktemas? That seems like such a sublime combinationâŠ
Cheers : )

One of my first DSD purchase on Qobuz, and I just cannot recommend this to anyone!
The recording is crap and the compression/loudness one of the worst I ever heard.
Proposing this in DSD/SACD format just doesnât make any senseâŠ
Clearly guys, always prefer a good 16/44.1 CD format with correct dynamic range to any supposedly hires format where average dynamic range is crap (below 8dB - the Iggyâs record above is barely 3dB dynamic range as measured by Roon)
Oh dear, I think I may have oversold myself a bit. Rest assured I am not burdened with any particular classical acumen (certainly not if you had asked my piano teacher!) although I have listened to an awful lot in my life and I know what I like. However I am sure you have and do too. You donât need any particular classical acumen to hear the difference between Sullivanâs and Uchidaâs approaches and there is a fair chance you will enjoy one or the other more. Give it a try, what do you think?
I posted an update over in my âNew Kidâ thread. Hope it helps!
Further to my recent post on the Qobuz/DSD thread, Iâm now listening to;
Big Brother & the Holding Company: Cheap Thrills
Acid Rock, Blues-Rock
Columbia - 1968
DSD 64
To my ears, it sounds better than I expectedâŠ

Iâve just listened to the Qobuz DSD download of Let It Bleed (50th anniversary edition, 2019 Remaster), which sounded good to meâŠ
I also have the 2010 SHM SACD version in my library
Iâve just listened to the final track, âYou Canât Always Get What You Wantâ, back to back.
I know, not proper A to B, but for quick comparison purposesâŠ
Clearly, the remastering is different but, on first impressions, the Qobuz version is more pleasing to my ears.
