What's Spinning October 2024

Had me looking out other live albums from that era that I haven’t played for too long. I think this was a couple of years later, about 1981. Again, some superb performances.

I have a confession to make. I used to have a lingering antipathy for compilation albums, based on some (mis)conception that studio albums were all atomic artistic concepts and compilations discarded the artistic ”red thread” in the name of the Yankee dollar. The wisdom of years has taught me that this is not (always) the case. And especially in this age of streaming, ”radio” and set-and-forget I find that compilations, especially ”multi-disc” (as the majority of streamed material still seems to be based on the CD legacy) form a slowly growing proportion of my listening. Oh the shame!

Anyone out there who recognises themselves in this? Or am I just a conservative curmudgeon? (No need to answer that last one).

Now really enjoying this**:

Toots & the Maytals ”Time Tough (The Anthology)” 1996, Qobuz 16/44.1

** Broadway Jungle is a very significant cut in the ”soundtrack of my life”. When I was at Uni this was always the track my flatmates and I started playing on a Friday night prior to hitting the toon. It is 2’49” of party! Memories of many great nights, epic conquests and ignominious failures!
