Hi Jonathan,
Happy Holidays!

Are you sure this is a true DDD256 recording of Bill Evan? Is this clear from the notes? was it a analog tape remaster? or was it Upsampled from DSD64?

I’m pretty sure that all of my high res BE recordings are DSD64 and want to know if I have missed something

Thank you!

Obviously the answer is yes. Bill Evans died before DSD was invented and this recording dates from 1963 before the invention of digital recording. HDTT means High Definition Tape Transfers. A bit of a clue there :grin:

HDTT’s explanation of formats is a bit ambiguous. As far as I an able to understand this although they offer DSD64, 128 and 256, the sampling rates that they use for the transfer are DSD64 or DSD128 as these are the only sample rates spoken of later in the piece. But, as I say, it is not really clear. However they also indicate that for editing DSD is transferred to PCM DXD and back.

This forum is about dCS and I assume that postings are made here on the subject of spinning recordings heard with a dCS based replay system. So I do not understand @Bauer spinning DSD 256 recordings as this format is not currently supported by dCS. Perhaps he can comment?

It’s all just a numbers game anyway.

@keiserrg @PAR

FYI, here is the link to this album on the HDTT website

As @PAR says, it’s rather ambiguous, as this album refers to “Digital re-mastering in DSD 256” (there is no mention of utilising DXD)…

I have to downsample (in Roon) to DSD 128.

Hopefully, we’ll soon be able to play DSD 256 files but, in the meantime, the downsampled version still sounds great on my system!

Hi Pete,
“Obviously” the question was if it was a digital sample from analog tape direct to DSD256, which is done at select studios.

Every Bill Evans DSD file I own is analog to DSD64. I didn’t think any studios had gone back and resampled direct to DSD256, but @Bauer has a very broad and deep musical palette, and I thought I would ask him.

Based on the link that Jonathan sent, I’m quite sure this was originally DSD64, and then upsampled.

Re: DSD256 playback, the best strategy, in anticipation of dCS (finally?) offering it, is to acquire all files in the highest original sample rate, and then if necessary downsample to DSD128 inside Roon. This only applies to files 256 and higher. This way, once offered, no need to redownload.

Cheers.

Thanks Keiserrg. I came across this ( see link). Althorn it does not deal with the particular Bill Evans title it does give much insight into HDTT’s production methods in general and may reinforce the idea that the B.E could indeed be directly transferred from analogue tape to DSD256. It is till unclear to me but the possibility is there.

Thanks @PAR

@keiserrg

I have found this Positive Feedback article, which mentions this about the B.E. album in question;

“…The transfer is in Pure DSD256 from a 15ips 2-track tape…”

Does anyone listen to avant-garde jazz? I have a pretty broad music knowledge but recently became exposed to music that is described as avant-garde jazz. It isnt free form and it has traces of many things that i have heard. Artists that I’ve heard include lounge lizards, john zorn, steve coleman, ray anderson OM Trio, water shed 5tet, henry threadgill . I’m interested. Anyone else know this musical area. I have listened to a number of albums by some of these guys and understand the style can vary substantially from release to release. Thx. B

I also have that Nightfly Japanese SACD - love it!

Thielemann’s Bruckner symphony cycle with the VPO has been outstanding IMO. And excellent recordings by Sony.
