Roon, but is it time to try something different?

I had a N100, it’s fine.
The only thing i found was the power supply that came with it is great at putting nasty stuff into the ring main. It didn’t seem to affect the N100 but it certainly did to everything else plugged into the same ring.
I ended up getting a cheap power supply for it, but found that i could get the same results by just plugging the melco into a different ring, rather than the 2 i have just for my hifi.
But it worked well, and sounded fine.

Following on from my post…My dealer is trying to tempt me with spending £9,000-£13,000 on a music server. (Well they would, wouldn’t they) Not overly keen on me buying a £599 Nucleus!:smirk:
I guess when you are talking about some of the wonderful systems that dCS members have, is £9,000 that much if it gives them the results they’re wanting?
I’m not an electronics engineer, neither do I have a degree in IT, so my knowledge in the above, is quite limited.
Many will disagree, but I have been advised to stay away from NUCs and Mac Minis, because of the noise they produce, and to concentrate solely on a Music Server.

If that’s what you decide to do, you may wish to audition the Antipodes K41 server

I am very happy with my K41 (Gen. 4).

Thank you for that info. What does your dCS and other bits comprise of?

BTW, nor am I/do I…

However, it’s really not necessary. The K41 is very easy to set up and manage, and it’s a breeze to use with Mosaic (most of my listening is UPnP).

Very, very nice!:+1:
I can see why you chose the A K41.

Funnily enough, I started off with a Bluesound Node.:smirk:

So did I

I still have it, but I only use it to take screenshots of what’s playing (via Mosaic) on the internet radio station (Radio Paradise) that I use to warm up my system in the mornings…

Radio Paradise has a great sound considering. No ads, no news. Bliss👍

Just a thought…how are you connecting your Rossini Apex DAC to the K41?

Absolutely! :grinning:

Via Ethernet (as recommended by dCS), from the K41’s ‘Direct Stream’ output into the Rossini’s Ethernet input.

Wow! That wasn’t one of the options that I thought you were going to say😀
I was thinking via a Switch, or even USB to USB.

Did you do a comparison, using the ‘Direct Stream’ and a Switch?

It’s a very simple (but effective) set up.

The configuration is;

Switch → K41 → Networks Acoustics Muon Pro → Rossini Apex DAC

EDIT: The Muon Pro is probably overkill, but I’m keeping it in the chain because I like what I’m hearing…

Hi @Merlot52

Just to add my £0.02…

I have a few Roon Core machines but currently I’m using an HP T630 Thin Client with 8GB of RAM and a 120GB m.2 SATA SSD running ROCK - £50 off eBay. I don’t use DSP effects or other Roon processing but it’s working fine for me with TIDAL, Qobuz and the music on my NAS which I think is probably 30+TB…

Cheers

Thanks a bunch for that info Phil :+1:

Thanks to all for your kind suggestions.

Of course, my post opened up a can of worms for me, as per usual!

I kind of went in the direction of a Melco N5, but my dealer informs me, you can’t use it as a Roon Core! :astonished: I do not want a NAS/NUC.

So, a Silent Angel, Rhein Z1 Plus, (which is actually more in my price range at this moment in time) is possibly the direction I’ll go.
I have more or less decided on the ‘No storage option’, simply because it’s £2,499 and the 4TB version is £4,999. That works out at £625 per 1TB of storage! :astonished:

Plan ‘B’ is to get an external USB drive and attach it to the Z1 Plus. Please see photo.
I have spoken to Silent Angel, who have said this will work well, but with the caveat of connecting the USB directly to the unit, not using a cable. This means a small (500GB-1TB) flash drive. Not an issue for me, as my music library is under 500GB.

When Silent Angel said “No Cable”. Does anyone have a comment on that? Many portable SSD drives come with a very short 30-40cm cable. Would that be ‘noisy’?
Thanks.

Mac running Roon Core networked over ethernet
dCS Rossini APEX DAC
dCS Rossini Master Clock

connected via ethernet >1gbs
Run Roon or Mosaic App (can easily see Qobuz, Tidal, etc. for search or playlists) on phone or laptop or iPad while listening to music over system

Also, same Roon Core on Mac pushing thru second system/rooms (via NAD M10)
