So nice to read a review from a professional musician!
Indeed, should be corrected!
Lina DAC X lacks a sonic signature in the best sense, and fits seamlessly into the illustrious line-up of Bartók, Vivaldi, and Varèse.
I showed interest in Lina X for a while but then…I think Lina X is just re-packed Bartok 2.0 with now pretty much accessible price on the second hand market.
Has anyone “upgraded” from Bartok 2.0 to Lina X? Any thoughts?
:ina X is not a repackaged Bartok but basically Lina in a cabinet to aesthetically fit with a traditional two channel audio system ( Lina was originality styled for the head-fi market).
If you want to upgrade Bartok for sonic reasons hen fitting the Apex upgrade is the step to take. Apex is not available for either Lina models.
dCS would be irrational to produce a cheaper new product with better performance than an existing model whilst keeping the latter current.

Spot on
Most likely I will patiently wait for Lina X to get Apex upgrade to justify (for myself) its price tag.
I don’t think we will see an APEX upgrade for Lina, per say. Lina has a single flex board and as such the entire board would need to be replaced for any upgrade. Based on comments from dCS throughout this forum, the design and optimization of Lina was informed by what was done for Varese. So in essence some of the Varese goodness has made it into Lina (optimized Flex circuit board) even if it is not the Apex circuit it self
That is if Lina can have an Apex upgrade. This involves a new DAC section and output stage. However the thing about Lina is that it is not constructed from individual circuit boards but a single board which folds to allow it to fit in the case. So I would imagine that there’s no obvious way of adding Apex .
I asked about the apex upgrade on the lina, basically told it would never happen, due to having to get the board completely re tested to pass the regulations. This just wouldn’t be cost effective.
So if you want an apex dCS dac, the lina range isn’t for you.
