Lovely Erno @Ermos :gem: “This Mortal Coil” is a dark wave gem of a band. Qobuz even has a highres version of “Blood”. You are most probably aware of this record, but for others who might want to explore further and enjoy something in a similar direction:

Remnants Of A Deeper Purity
Black Tape For A Blue Girl

Black Tape For A Blue Girl have shaped the wave genre in a similar way as This Mortal Coil has. Their ethereal voices over soundscapes created with synths allow you to let yourself sink into the music.

Anyone who likes the same dark undercurrent with distinct jazz and experimental music overtones might enjoy Tuxedomoon. Also a group that markedly influenced the genre.

Desire / No Tears
Tuxedomoon

The opening track lasts almost 15 minutes and the scene might be set in a bohemian quarter of Paris - or maybe Madrid? And then the lyrics shatter that association. Suddenly, we are nowhere. In the second song we get to hear “Feel like Cassandra dancing / The last dance of the bones dancing / In spite of sudden death as if at last”. And all that set against a dark and droning bass line and the rest of the group playing a form of slow, punctuated and haunting jazz. You get the gist…

Although most people probably think the only Talking Heads live release is Stop Making Sense, the fact is that there’s an earlier, even better live album called The Name of This Band Is Talking Heads.

RIP Charles Robert Watts (2 June 1941 – 24 August 2021).

In addition to his work with the Rolling Stones, this is the last album he released:

Charlie Watts meets the Danish Radio Big Band (Live at the Danish Radio Concert Hall, Copenhagen 2010) (2017, Impulse! Records).

Just listening to an unsung - forgive the pun - hero of mine Mike Edwards who’s talent has been hidden under the largest bushel ever…! This rare and beautiful album shows off his talents as singer/song writer and guitarist with a band called ‘Spiritual Wardrobe’ there are some Youtube videos of them worth looking at too imho. But Mike Edwards earlier claim to fame was a trio of albums with band ‘Live Wire’ made for A & M with the legendary Glyn Johns engineering and producing. A shame another band at the same time - Dire Straits - seemed to corner the market with a similar sound. These 3 albums never even made it to CD or digital downloads. So again Youtube has some very energetic videos to reveal their music and energy.

Spiritual Wardrobe can be heard on Qobuz with this album ‘Songs with the Bark still on them’.

Exploring the possibilities of electronica and laptop composition even further, Pieter Nooten, one of the original members of Clan of Xymox and former collaborator with Michael Brook brings us the astounding acoustic and organic sounding ‘Surround Us’.

The album features gorgeous guest vocalists interspersed with beautiful, classical compositions.

Far beyond the clichés of contemporary electronica, Nooten squeezes heart wrenching melancholia -beautifully executed, honest and intimate - out of the ‘digital box’, proving how good and deeply heartfelt home recorded electronica can sound. Nooten delivers a true masterpiece of laptop composition.
