Reference system for dCS

I recently bought Vivid Audio Giya G4 CU for casual living room use. Before putting them in the living room with an all-in-one unit, where TV connection is more than 80%, I am using the G4 with my main system in the study, swapping them with my Marten Mingus Quintet 2.

What a difference in sound signature! The G4 are hyper-analytical and have much stronger bass kicks than the Quintet 2 (I prefer the Quintet 2nand will swap them back into my study). This makes me wonder what standard/reference amps, speakers, and cables dCS uses to evaluate its products during the development stage…

As I understand it, dCS utilises a variety of amps, loudspeakers and cables…

I think you will find they design their products to be as neutral as they possibly can. So it doesn’t colour the music. You can then add whatever amps and speakers you like to colour that sound to one you like best. But again dCS try and use the most transparent amps they can as this better shows off the difference in the range rather than you listening to what a pre amp or just amp is doing to the sound

My curiosity is what are the “most transparent amps” (obviously tube amps are excluded?)

I find it interesting that “three manufacturers give us 95% coverage of our distributor base.” As I am not stuck to my dCS dealer for choosing amps, speakers, and cables, I would rather explore other dealers for the non-DAC components, as I previously did.

A distributor visiting the factory and bringing their dealers for training or a new product introduction will typically want us to show our products in the context of other lines they carry. This is the main use case for the factory demo room, not end customers.

dCS use various speakers, amplifiers and cable sets in their demonstration room. These will be changed in accordance with the customer’s taste or needs.

When visiting the factory it was explained that the main purpose of the dem room is training distributors. what is used does not necessarily represent what dCS may think of as best ( whatever that word means), but it features high end products that are typically also handled by the distributor being trained.

IThe system in use may well not suit your preferences anyway. You need to make your own choices . I have to say that the system that I and my companions heard was not liked by any of us. Great products ( Wilson Alexa V, Constellation amps Transparent cables) just simply not to our collective taste. others will love it.

In general I would not advise relying on systems in manufacturers’ demonstrations as necessarily representing the bes that could be chosen. Commercial considerations may rule what is used.

Now I understand how it works.
