Bartok + Lina Master Clock: USB2 trouble

Good morning,
I am the owner of dCS Bartok (not apex) and a Lina Master Clock.
The dCS Bartok is connected via XLR to the pre Audioresearch ref 6se which is connected to the amp Audioresearch ref 80s always through XLR cables.
The cables are all transparent super even those that go to the Wilson Sophia 3.
I have music files saved on some USB sticks that I connect to the Bartok through the digital input in USB2.
Unfortunately, every time I select the USB input I hear, during the playback of the files, noises, such as the shooting of sparks, which prevent me from listening.
These noises are only felt with the USB 2 input.
What can I do to solve the problem?
Thank you
Cesare

I can’t point out for sure but could you please remove the clock from the chain and see if you still hear such artifacts?

Hi @Cesare,

Is it all files that you play from USB?

What format are the files that are on your USB sticks?

Are they all the same format?

Where were they sourced from?

Do you have a UPnP server on your network and if so do you get the same noises when you play the files via UPnP?

Are the noises that you hear always at the same places in the files? Are they at the start of playback and at track change or are they in the middle of the tracks?

If you contact [email protected] then it would be good to get access to some of those files to see if we can recreate the issue and / or take a look at the files themselves?

BR

Phil

Sounds like DSD 256 or higher files, that will get you some DC to your amplifier

I don’t think that is feasible. If a file with a sample rate resolution greater than Bartok’s maximum support of DSD128 is tried it will simply not be played. In any case we have so far not been given any information of the file types being tried other than that they are stored on USB sticks. Hence the request from Phil at support above.

I am wondering if the “spark” sounds heared by Cesare are actually glitches caused by incorrect synchronisation of the Lina clock. Details of how this has been connected and modes selected may be useful information.

Yes it is possible, by accident I pressed play on a DSD 256 file (SSD connected to Rossini), no music was playing offcourse, but for a moment loud noise came through my speakers before my amplifier switched off. (DC protection Moon amplifier)

Luckily the amp started up again after toggling the main switch

Good morning Phil,

The noises are felt on all the files that are on three different USB sticks.

The files have been purchased (Qobuz, HDtracks, etc)

The formats are different, however all hi res (wav, Flac, dsd etc)

There is no UPnP server.

The noises are heard at different points and also in the middle of the tracks.

I will try to contact the support service.

Thank you

[/quoteThank you for the suggestion.

I tried to turn off the Clock, unfortunately the noise remains.

As I mentioned earlier your issue may result from glitches produced because the Lina wordclock is not connected correctly and/or an incorrect synch mode has been selected.

I would first check your wordclock cable interconnection s. Is clock 1 Lina BNC output connected to group 1 clock input on Bartok and clock 2 Lina output to group 2 wordclock input on Bartok? Have they been inadvertently been mixed up? Are your wordclclok BNC interconnects 75 ohm?

With Bartok using the Lina wordclock, synch should be set to W auto. Bartok should display synch setting of W1 or W2 which will change as track resolution alters.

I see that you have tried to turn the clock off but that may be a language issue as to try means that you did not succeed. @hifimckinney requests to test the clock should be removed ( not just switched off). If this is done the synch mode should be changed to A.

As per first post, only happens with USB, not with other input’s on the Bartok.
That should rule out a clock problem.

Are you using an extension cord for the USB sticks or directly in the Bartok ?
